HX5 is currently seeking an early career Aerospace Engineer to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe selected candidate will support the development of fuel to electric conversion for powertrains and their supporting technologies. This includes subsystems with the powertrain, distributed propulsion architectures, and propulsion airframe integration. Primary objective s are in the development of a small drone, where the design and prototyping of subscale components facilitates the way for application to full scale vehicles and general aviation.
The chosen candidate should be knowledgeable about cycle analysis and comparisons of advanced thermal cycles for the fuel to power conversion system and in the elements needed to deliver the fuel to electric conversion device. In addition, background in the design, prototyping, and testing of turbo machinery relevant to hybrid electric powertrains for aircraft is desired. Primarily, the selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Support requirement development and design trade studies to define hardware
- Perform validation of functions and performance
- Develop a prototype turbo generator for a distributed propulsion drone
This effort is monitored by the Intelligent Control and Autonomy Branch at NASA GRC, which conducts research and development of technologies to increase the level of intelligence and autonomy in complex aerospace space systems with a strong focus on aero-space propulsion systems.
Required Skills- Proficient in Matlab and Simulink
- Experience with SOLIDWORKS
- Experience with ANSYS
- Experience with thermal analysis
- Experience with rotordynamic analysis and bearing system design
- Experience with basic compressor design trades and implementation on small systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly motivated and able to work independently
- Experience working with NASA
- Committed to successful collaboration with the NASA team and partners
- Experience in hybrid electric system-level development
- Experience in requirements development for hardware development and testing
- Experience in fuel to electric conversion for hybrid electric aircraft
Completed at least a bachelor of science degree in a STEM-related major, from an accredited program, with 0 to 2 years of experience.
