Research Mechanic III

NASA Glenn Research Center – Brook Park, OH

HX5 is currently seeking a Research Mechanic III to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance and Engineering (TFOME) contract at NASA Glenn Research Center. The TFOME team at the NASA Glenn Research Center provides engineering and technical services in the aeronautics, space power and propulsion test facilities.

Responsibilities

The Research Mechanic performs mechanical-related technical assignments within a research laboratory test environment. This position will support the operations of research test facilities by maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing research hardware and mechanical systems or equipment. This position creates value for the facility by performing preventative and corrective maintenance leading to increased uptime and reliability, thus helping the facility to meet quality testing goals.

Duties and responsibilities may include but not limited to:

  • Repair machinery or mechanical equipment, including examining machines and mechanical equipment to diagnose the source of trouble, dismantling or partly dismantling machines, and performing repairs that primarily involve the use of hand tools for scraping and fitting parts.
  • Replace broken or defective parts with items obtained from stock, order the production of replacement parts from a machine shop, or send the machine to a machine shop for major repairs.
  • Prepare written specifications for major repairs or for the production of parts ordered from machine shops, reassemble machines, and make all necessary adjustments for proper operation.
  • Requires comprehensive training and experience, typically acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a 4-year State approved apprenticeship program with a Journeyman’s certificate highly desired or have equivalent vocational school training with sufficient combined work experience and skills.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years working experience as a Journeyman Level Mechanic such as a maintenance mechanic, machine repair technician.
Preferred
  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of research test facilities and associated equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or supervision.
  • Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of work flow.
  • Must be self-motivated and a "Team Player" with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.

Position Requirements
  • Must be a US Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, man-lifts, cab cranes, suspended platforms or cages, etc.
  • Must be able to work while bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, or in a prone position for extended time periods.
  • Must be able to work in closely confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds, sometimes up and down stairways, where lifting devices and hoists are not available.
  • Must be able to push and pulls heavy objects.
  • Ability to use hearing and vision protection and respiratory equipment.
  • Ability to distinguish eight-color panel display.
