Commercial Financial Controller

We are Shack Events, a leading bar & confectionery operator in the UK. We serve alternative drinks at sporting venues, and as of 2023 we also offer confectionery support.

We are looking for an ambitious Commercial Financial Controller to report directly to the Group Finance Director. This role goes beyond reporting; it involves taking responsibility for the P&L, partnering with operations, challenging the status quo, and driving performance through KPI management.

• Team Management: Line‑manage and mentor the Finance Manager and Finance Assistant across both businesses, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement and accountability.
• Reporting: Oversee preparation of timely and accurate monthly management accounts, ensuring compliance with UK GAAP.
• Compliance: Ensure robust financial controls, compliance with statutory requirements (VAT, audit, PAYE) and assist with the year‑end statutory process.
• Payroll: Directly manage payroll and associated statutory filings (PAYE, pensions).
• Working Capital Management: Proactively manage working capital, including cash flow forecasting, asset financing and supplier credit terms.
• Systems: Champion continuous improvement in finance systems and processes to enhance efficiency and data integrity.
• Commercial Business Partnering & Performance: Act as a key business partner to operational directors, challenging assumptions and decisions based on financial analysis.
• P&L Ownership & Strategy: Hold direct responsibility for the P&L of both entities and collaborate closely with directors to meet profitability targets.
• KPI Analysis: Develop, track and analyse KPIs specific to the events industry, presenting insights to drive operational efficiency.
• Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead annual budgeting and ongoing forecasting, aligning targets with group strategy.
• Pricing & Contracts: Provide financial input into contracts, tenders and pricing strategies to maximise profitability.
• Variance Analysis: Analyse performance against budget/forecast and recommend corrective actions.

• Qualification: Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with at least 2 years post‑qualification experience.
• Experience: Senior commercial finance role within a fast‑paced SME, ideally in events/hospitality/project sectors, with experience in transformation and change management.
• Commercial Acumen: Demonstrated ability to partner commercially, challenge senior stakeholders and drive performance through KPIs.
• Leadership: Strong team management, confident communication, trust‑building and constructive challenge across functions.
• Systems: Advanced proficiency in Excel financial modelling and relevant accounting software.

Hybrid working available: 3 days per week at our Bromyard office (HR7 4LU
) and 2 days per week from home. At least one trip per month to our London office will be required.
