Job DescriptionThe Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full-time Veterinarian in the Food Safety Division. This position (PIN #) is in state government and will work throughout the State of Oklahoma; the duty station will be assigned based on the selected candidate’s residence. The State of Oklahoma offers a comprehensive Benefits Package, including a generous benefit allowance to offset the cost of insurance premiums for employees and their eligible dependents.
The hourly pay for this position is up to $51.44 based on education and experience.
Basic Purpose / Position DescriptionThis Veterinarian position is tasked as an Enforcement, Investigations, & Analysis Officer (EIAO). This position performs veterinary dispositions of suspected animals and carcasses as outlined in agency policies, state statutes, and administrative rules relating to various licensing programs, emergency response programs, disease surveillance programs, and animal disease traceability programs.
Typical FunctionsProvides expert level evaluation, consultation, and training regarding humane handling and slaughter of livestock. Provides instruction and training regarding animal disease signs and anatomy to meat inspection personnel statewide. Performs advanced monitoring of state inspected and Talmadge‑Aiken (TA) meat and/or poultry slaughter and/or processing establishments, ensuring that establishments comply with State and Federal laws and regulations.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Level I: Knowledge of veterinary regulatory and animal diseases, working safely around animals; requirements of state and federal regulations. Abilities include meeting the physical demands of continuous work with livestock, using a personal computer efficiently, communicating orally and in writing, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, speaking effectively before groups, following written and oral instructions, and maintaining composure and professionalism during stressful situations.
Level II: Knowledge of veterinary regulatory and animal diseases, working safely around animals; requirements of state and federal regulations; components of making a presentation; technical writing; and safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Abilities include meeting the physical demands of continuous work with livestock, using a personal computer efficiently, communicating orally and in writing, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, speaking effectively before groups, following written and oral instructions, maintaining composure and professionalism during stressful situations, analyzing data, making informed decisions, and multitasking.
Level III: Knowledge of various research strategies and techniques; team dynamics; adult education techniques and practices; and prevention and control of diseases. Abilities include reading and understanding animal behavior, diagnosing animals presenting with various ailments, and adapting to changing demands and/or shifting priorities.
Level IV: Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles, Oklahoma laws and regulations, Oklahoma legislative and rule making processes, veterinary regulatory processes, and disease control and eradication. Abilities include presenting statements of fact and articulating information orally and in writing, analyzing, interpreting, and applying various laws, rules, regulations, and agency policies and procedures, and directing and performing difficult research, analyzing, and taking appropriate actions.

Knowledge of animal disease presentations and their potential zoonotic and other public health impacts, including possible foodborne illness or other potential impacts to the animal agriculture industry.
