SUMMARY

Teamwork and vertical alignment is a hallmark of the Owasso Public Schools band program. The Director of Band Operations is responsible for leading the band staff in teaching an overview of instrumental music elements, styles, techniques, and music literacy to the secondary band and color guard students in 6th-12th grades. Also responsible for leading the staff in providing curricular and extracurricular opportunities to use the learned skills in keeping with the District philosophies, procedures, policies, and programs.

All employees of OPS are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, champion the needs of our students, and drive continuous improvement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Coordinates with the Director of Fine Arts, the fine arts department chairs, and site principals to meet District curriculum goals and objectives.
  • Leads the certified band staff, assistants, adjunct staff, contractors, and students in maintaining a world-class instrumental music program.
  • Works to ensure vertical alignment of curriculum and extracurricular opportunities.
  • Organizes the instruction of band/color guard classes based on the Oklahoma Academic Standards.
  • Organizes the band and color guard program for assigned buildings.
  • Plans competitive activities such as OSSAA, OBA, OkMEA, WGI, BOA, and other regional contests and festivals.
  • Maintains working knowledge of OSSAA, OBA, WGI, and BOA rules and regulations.
  • Coordinates and schedules activities and concerts according to the school calendar.
  • Encourages respect for and enjoyment of all public performances.
  • Stresses good sportsmanship in competition.
  • Assumes responsibility for the administration of band music funds.
  • Collaborates with the Fine Arts office in budgeting and requisitioning supplies, as well as accounting for receipts and disbursement of funds.
  • Maintains accurate inventory record of equipment and uniforms.
  • Exemplifies citizenship, sportsmanship, and professionalism in behavior and performance of duties.
  • Promotes community understanding through communication with parents and concern for students.
  • Remains current in the field of music education through professional organizations, professional literature, workshops, performances, adjudicating, and in‑service programs.
  • Complies with the position description of district administrative leader.
  • Assists with special projects throughout the district.
  • Acts as a leader and liaison with qualified patron organizations.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Director of Fine Arts, the Assistant Superintendent or the Superintendent.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in education-related discipline, preferably in music education. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5 years minimum of band teaching experience.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and laws applicable to education and special education. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done. Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision and work as a team player.

Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees. Ability to listen effectively. Knowledge of the overall operation of a functioning, vertically aligned band program and its relation to the community and school district.
