The Nursing Instructor is responsible for simulation and/or clinical instruction and evaluation; program development; team collegiality and problem solving on a per diem basis. The instructor must demonstrate leadership and organizational skills, communicate appropriately with students, peers, and professional associates, and conduct themselves in accordance with the Code for Professional Nurses and the Core Competencies for Nurse Educators.

Facilitate Learning
  • Implement a variety of teaching strategies appropriate to student needs, desired outcomes, content and context, grounded in educational theory.
  • Identify multicultural, gender and experiential influences on teaching and learning; use technology to support the learning process.
  • Apply oral, written and electronic communication that reflects awareness of self and others, conveying ideas in a range of contexts and creating opportunities for critical thinking development.
  • Demonstrate interest in and respect for students, developing collegial relationships with students, faculty, associates and clinical agency personnel to promote positive learning environments.
  • Request textbooks, audiovisual materials, laboratory equipment and other supplies/equipment.
  • Facilitate student development and socialization by identifying individual learning needs and styles of adult, multicultural, educationally and physically challenged, at‑risk, and second‑degree students.
  • Provide resources to diverse students that address their individual learning needs.
  • Engage in effective advisement and counseling strategies, creating learning environments focused on socialization to the role of the nurse, facilitating self‑reflection and personal goal setting, and fostering cognitive, psychomotor and affective development.
  • Assist students in developing the ability to engage in thoughtful and constructive self‑evaluation.
Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies
  • Use a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate learning in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains.
  • Implement assessment and evaluation strategies appropriate to the student and student goals, enhancing the teaching‑learning process.
  • Draw on literature to design teaching and evaluation strategies.
  • Exhibit a spirit of inquiry about teaching, learning, student development and evaluation methods.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and demonstrate skill in designing and using tools for assessing clinical practice.
  • Maintain current records of student achievement; write weekly anecdotal notes, submit course grades, clinical evaluation tools and absences to the team leader.
  • Collaborate with students on clinical warning and design educational plans; assist in interpreting and implementing philosophy and goals of BHSN policies.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, revision and evaluation of the BHSN educational program.
Integrate Values and Behaviors for Professionalism
  • Model professional behavior, including involvement in professional organizations, lifelong learning, community activities, publications and presentations.
  • Maintain a professional practice knowledge base; serve as a role model of professional nursing; prepare reports and accreditation materials as required.
  • Serve on Faculty Organization committees, hospital committees, and as an advisor to student government associations; support student activities.
  • Assist in recruitment and orientation of faculty and students; participate in transition courses, open houses, and graduation ceremonies.
Other
  • Track absences and submit clinical warnings to the team leader.
  • Provide direct supervision over clinical groups of nursing students.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and employees.
  • Commit to recognizing and respecting cultural diversity for all customers.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers, respecting cultural, value, belief and age differences, utilizing interpreters when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
