Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Specialist Nurse

We are looking to welcome a highly motivated, confident, and enthusiastic nurse who will be an integral part of our IBD nursing service. The successful applicant will work closely with the Lead IBD Nurse Specialist, IBD CNS team and MDT to provide excellent, specialised nursing care and support for patients with IBD in inpatient and outpatient clinic settings.

You will be welcomed into our IBD nurse service where we will support you to develop expert knowledge and skills in order for you to provide excellent, evidence-based professional care and advice.

Main duties of the job

Duties will include managing nurse-led face to face and virtual outpatient and biologic clinics, in-patient clinical reviews, and providing expert clinical advice and information via the direct-access patient telephone and email service.

You will provide comprehensive clinical assessment, advice, education and support to patients to promote self-care in IBD disease and medications management. You will implement early investigations, changes in treatment/medication and facilitate rapid access to secondary care services for patients, relatives, carers and clinicians, in relation to the management of IBD.

Job responsibilities

To provide specialist clinical support, advice and information, to the highest possible standard of evidence-based, patient-centred care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease within North Bristol Trust.

You will be required to participate in and manage nurse-led clinics and the direct- access patient support telephone/email service, multi-disciplinary team meetings and in-patient clinical review, support and advice for patients with inflammatory bowel disease with the support of the lead IBD Nurse Specialist, IBD CNS team and Consultant Gastroenterologists.

The post-holder is required to work as an autonomous practitioner, provide leadership and be a source of clinical expertise and professional advice, and act as a specialist resource to the patient, relatives, carers and the multidisciplinary team.

The post-holder will play a significant role in setting and maintaining standards, clinical guidelines and protocols, locally and trust wide. You will be proactive in identifying areas for development and improvement within the IBD nursing service and Gastroenterology team.

You will participate in departmental audit and research programmes and be actively involved in educating others and disseminating good practice.

You will work closely with the lead IBD Specialist nurse, IBD CNS team, Gastroenterology Consultants and Specialist Registrars and be responsible for specialised nursing management of a defined caseload of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

The post holder will facilitate the management of IBD patients between primary and secondary care.

Person Specification Experience and Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse, Level 1
  • Current NMC registration
  • Preferably BSc or Diploma in Nursing
  • Experience in Gastroenterology or related setting
  • Teaching qualification
  • Physical assessment and clinical examinations course
Knowledge
  • Current knowledge of IBD and clinical treatment of IBD
  • Clinical standard setting and audit process
  • The relevant legislation and code of conduct relating to nursing practice
  • The relevant Health and Safety policies and risk management
  • Health Education
Skills
  • Demonstrate excellent standard of interpersonal and communication skills with patient, relatives, carers, multi-disciplinary team
