An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6/7 Locum Adult Acute Speech and Language Therapist at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. This role offers the chance to work with adults who have acquired communication and swallowing difficulties resulting from stroke, neurosurgical procedures, neurological conditions, and medical disorders. The position is available for both full-time and part-time hours, with an immediate start and a 3-month duration.

The role will involve working across a variety of hospital settings, including stroke wards, medical/complex care wards, neurosciences wards, critical care, and outpatients, providing specialist SLT assessments, diagnosis, and treatment.

Responsibilities
:
As a Band 6/7 Speech and Language Therapist, you will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of adults with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties due to stroke, acquired neurological conditions, neurosurgical procedures, or other medical disorders. You will manage both inpatient and outpatient caseloads, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic care. In critical care settings or high dependency beds, you may be required to manage patients with tracheostomy or ventilator dependence, providing tailored interventions to address both communication and swallowing needs.

You will pursue continuous professional development and stay up-to-date with the latest evidence-based practices in speech and language therapy for adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties. Additionally, you will provide specialist advice and rehabilitation services to patients, ensuring a collaborative approach with the wider healthcare team, including primary care professionals and relevant agencies.

Qualifications and Experience
:

  • Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
  • HCPC registered Speech and Language Therapist
  • Significant experience in adult acute speech and language therapy, particularly in communication and swallowing disorders
  • Experience in working with patients post-stroke, neurosurgical procedures, and neurological conditions
  • Ability to work across a range of settings, including stroke wards, medical/complex care, neurosciences, critical care, and outpatients
  • Experience managing patients with tracheostomy or ventilator dependence (desirable)
  • Knowledge and experience in assessing and treating both communication and swallowing difficulties
  • Ability to manage a diverse caseload and work autonomously
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and evidence-based practice
