Position: Senior Clinical Fellow Urology ST7+

The Bristol Urological Institute offers an exciting opportunity to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in Urology to commence October 2026.

There is plenty opportunity to participate in the ongoing research in the department.

The successful candidates will be expected to participate in the service activities in the department.

It is desirable that candidates have experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent.

Overseas applicants are expected to be eligible for registration with the General Medical Council and have passed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall score of 7.5. This must be clearly outlined on their application. Please check the GMC website for details.

Please note North Bristol NHS Trust will not pay any interview expenses in connection with this post.

Main duties of the job

The post is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining experience in specialised upper tract minimally invasive surgery, with particular emphasis on Renal Cancer Surgery utilising open and minimally invasive approaches, complex upper urinary tract reconstruction (including pyeloplasty) and adrenalectomy.

The post holder will participate in a 1:12 on call rota and will be responsible for the day-to-day management of ward patients.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the service activities in the department.

Teaching

The Bristol Urological Institute has an active teaching programme and Fellows and Registrars are expected to actively participate in this activity.

The post holder will be available to undertake teaching sessions for medical students and junior doctors as required. In certain circumstances you may be required to cover a colleague's clinical duties in order that they may deliver teaching sessions

Research

1/2 day dedicated research session is provided for all fellows/SpRs. There are several ongoing research projects and fellows are expected to participate in these projects as well as undertaking at least one audit project during their training.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Maintain appropriate registration with the GMC
  • FRCS (Urol) or equivalent
  • Completed structured training in urology and wishing to pursue a career with an interest in upper tract robotic surgery
  • Evidence of training progression
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
  • ATLS/ALS
Experience
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Experience as a specialist registrar or equivalent, in urology (5 years at least)
  • Skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Experience in upper tract laparoscopy/robotic surgery
Knowledge
  • Evidence of understanding and application of knowledge of speciality
  • Willing to seek help from senior colleagues as appropriate
Skills
  • Competent in the management of elective and emergency urology patients
  • Competent in core urology procedures (Cystoscopy, TURP, TURBT, Stenting ...etc)
  • Experience of basic life support and resuscitation skills
  • Accepts responsibility and able to take leadership role for ward based emergencies
Personal Requirements
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives
  • Able to establish good working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Good oral and written presentation skills
