About your teamThe Open Source Office (OSO) is a new team, aimed at governing the use of open source software (OSS) offers a central place in Fidelity to oversee OSS use (all third‑party open source software, libraries, frameworks, containers and components used, considered, contributed to or distributed by Fidelity), across all environments. OSS‑related activities include selection, approval, onboarding, lifecycle management, contribution, sponsorship, vulnerability management and community engagement.
Aboutthe role
The Open Source Office Lead helps to set & drive our open source strategy, governance and community engagement. This role uniquely blends technical acumen with legal insight, ensuring our open source initiatives are both innovative and compliant. The role acts as a vital bridge between engineering, legal, and external communities, shaping how we contribute to, consume, and manage open source software.
Involving the following key responsibilities:
- Govern the use, contribution and procurement of open‑source software (OSS) across Fidelity
- Ensure OSS usage is compliant with regulatory requirements and internal controls
- Manage the licence and intellectual property risk, maintaining a catalogue of approved OSS
- Provide clear guidance for contributing to the open‑source community with validation checking
- Provide assessment service for those wishing to use unapproved OSS, working closely with Legal teams
- Assess new OSS capabilities to reduce unnecessary licence spend and support strategic objectives
- Provide reporting & recommendations aligned to software asset management processes
- Actively look for opportunities to build the FIL brand within the open‑source communities
- Work closely with key stakeholders to continuously assure the use of OSS
The skills you will bring to the team
- Technical Background
- Proven experience as a software engineer or developer (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Go, etc.).
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and modern development practices.
- Legal Knowledge
- Strong understanding of open source licenses and intellectual property principles.
- Experience working with legal teams or in a legal‑tech capacity.
- Leadership & Communication
- Excellent cross‑functional collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication, especially in translating legal concepts for technical audiences.
- Preferred Experience
- Prior involvement in open source projects or foundations.
- Experience in regulated industries or enterprise environments.
- You are a confident & thoughtful team player & leader, who can 'disrupt' existing ways of working by changing manual steps & tedious process etc into automated solutions. You can work quickly across a number of activities combined to provide creative, cost effective outcomes, keeping your stakeholders requirements close to your heart at all times.
