Lead Nurse, South West Burns Clinical Network (SWBCN) – North Bristol NHS Trust
Job OverviewThis is a strategic leadership role within the South West Burns Clinical Network (SWBCN), one of four specialised burns networks across England and Wales. The role supports the delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centred burn care across the region, working alongside senior leaders, clinicians, educators and commissioners to shape services that meet national standards.
Main Responsibilities- Collaborate with the Network Leadership Team and contribute nursing expertise across the burn care pathway.
- Coordinate a Senior Burn Nurses Specialist Interest Group (SIG) to deliver improvement initiatives.
- Represent the nursing group at the Network Board and other national meetings.
- Work with Directors of Nursing and Lead Burn Nurses from member organisations to sustain an expert workforce.
- Contribute to an integrated approach to burn care planning and implementation aligned with the Ten Year Health Plan, NHS priorities and the BBA National Standards.
- Engage with all designated specialised burn services, including medical and allied health professionals.
- Collaborate with Lead Nurses of other Burns Clinical Networks to deliver national nursing objectives.
- Develop and implement a regional nursing strategy aligned to national standards and NHS priorities.
- Identify service gaps and lead the development of mitigation strategies.
- Present complex or sensitive information at Network Board and NHS England Programme Board meetings.
- Chair the Burns Nurses Specialist Interest Group (SIG) and drive delivery of the Network Annual Work Programme.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives across the SWBCN.
- Translate strategic goals into practical plans for teams.
- Champion patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE).
- Advocate for patient, family and carer involvement in planning and improvement projects.
- Registered Nurse (Adult or Paediatric) registration on part 1 of the NMC Register.
- Degree in a health‑related subject.
- Evidence of nursing at Master’s level study or equivalent specialist experience.
- Specialist training in burns procedures and practices.
- Completed EMSB and/or Accredited Burns Course.
- Safeguarding qualifications for children and adults (Level
3) and compulsory learning‑disability training (Tier
2). - Evidence of continuous professional development.
- Postgraduate qualification in leadership, education or burn care.
- Qualification in project management or service improvement.
- Extensive experience in a burns nursing role at Band 7 or above, across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Highly effective leadership and motivation skills.
- Experience advising senior management teams on standards, governance and operational issues.
- Experience in service development, audit and quality improvement.
- Experience delivering multidisciplinary education and mentoring programmes.
- Experience in project management and guideline or policy writing.
- Experience working across organisational boundaries or networks.
- Experience contributing to national or regional policy or standards.
- Involvement in research or publications in burn care.
- Practical and theoretical expertise in specialist burn care.
- Knowledge of national burn care pathways and resource‑limited settings.
- In‑depth understanding of BBA National Standards and NHS service specifications.
- Judgement of complex facts or situations to support whole‑system work programmes.
- Understanding of risk, clinical governance and PSIR framework.
- Knowledge of nursing policy and practice developments.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in challenging environments.
- Strong organisational and project management abilities.
- Capability to lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
