Senior Hydrologist | Flood Hydraulic Modeller

Stantec is seeking a Senior Hydrologist – Flood Hydraulic Modeller to join our growing Hydrology and Flood Risk discipline within the Water Environment team. You can be based in one of our Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Bristol, or Cardiff offices, joining a friendly team and a collaborative group of over 90 Hydrologists, Hydrogeologists, Water Resources Planners, and Water Quality Scientists.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver and manage hydraulic modelling projects, including 1D–2D flood risk modelling and Strategic Resource Options (SRO) assessments.
  • Model new infrastructure in floodplains, eel screen installation assessments, reservoir decommissioning studies, and river restoration projects, primarily using Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, or Info Works ICM.
  • Develop hydraulic modelling methodologies and prepare fee proposals.
  • Perform quality assurance and technical review of hydraulic models.
  • Prepare Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) in line with national planning policy.
  • Apply hydrological methods (FEH, ReFH2, WINFAP) for flow estimation.
  • Use GIS tools (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
  • Liaise with local authorities and agencies such as LLFAs, the Environment Agency, SEPA, and water companies.
  • Produce high‑quality technical reports for a range of audiences.
  • Mentor, supervise, and train junior staff and drive continuous improvement in project delivery and quality assurance.
Required Qualifications
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related subject.
  • Member of a professional body (CIWEM, ICE, or equivalent) or working towards chartership.
  • Strong track record in delivering and managing hydraulic modelling projects.
  • Experience with Flood Modeller, TUFLOW or Info Works ICM for fluvial, pluvial and/or tidal modelling.
  • Knowledge of national planning policies and guidance (e.g., NPPF, SuDS Manual, non‑statutory drainage standards).
  • Proficiency in GIS and spatial analysis.
  • Excellent communication and client‑relationship skills.
Desirable but Not Essential
  • Surface water drainage strategy development incorporating SuDS (CIRIA guidance, LLFA requirements).
  • Experience in surface water drainage design (e.g., Micro Drainage/Info Drainage).
  • Studies for LLFAs (Flood Studies, SWMPs, Local Flood Risk Management Plans, FPSs).
  • Involvement in river restoration or Natural Flood Management schemes.
  • Support for planning applications with flood and drainage documentation.
  • Contribution to Environmental Impact Assessments, including flood and drainage chapters.
