The Role

We are seeking an experienced Naval Architect  to join the Submarine Naval Architecture team within the Naval Authority & Technology Group team. The role focuses on submarine propulsor, stability, and hydromechanics, providing technical leadership, assurance, and subject matter expertise in support of safe and capable submarine platforms.

You will act as a key authority within your discipline, supporting certification activities, shaping long-term R&D strategy, and contributing to standards and guidance across defence programmes.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and maintain technical expertise in submarine stability and propulsor systems

Manage the MSCA Propulsion capability area, including long-term capability development

Act as Propulsor TCG Lead, defining and managing the strategy for propulsor-related R&D

Chair the Propulsor Working Group, develop Propulsor SQEP, and provide SME guidance to delivery teams

Conduct second-party assurance reviews for the Stability Key Hazard Area, acting as a Naval Authority Reviewing Officer

Act as NARO, or provide guidance until formal NARO delegation is achieved, for Submarine Stability

Support R&D activities in submarine hydromechanics to ensure vessel safety and operational capability

Develop, maintain, and update technical guidance, Defence Standards, MAPs, and DSA rules

Lead and mentor graduate Naval Architects undertaking placements within the team

Manage international taskings and collaborative projects, including travel where required

Support wider business management activities, including project management, commercial input, and financial responsibilities

Key Tasks & Deliverables

Management of MSCA Propulsion Capability Area:

TCG / QTR summary presentations

CASP and TAF documentation

MoD-endorsed Propulsion milestones

NARO Responsibilities - KHA Submarine Stability:

NARO review documentation

NAF documentation supporting certification activities

Essential Skills & Experience

Qualified Naval Architect (Master's degree or equivalent experience)

Proven experience in submarine hydrodynamics

Experience with ship or submarine propulsion systems, including verification and validation (V&V) techniques

Desirable Skills & Experience

Knowledge of acoustic theory and measurement techniques

Professional registration such as CEng and/or MRINA

Additional Information

Hybrid and flexible working can be considered; however, regular onsite attendance is required to access SECRET material

Must be eligible for access to SUKEO data

DV clearance is highly desirable
