Associate Director/Technical Director – Building Performance Modelling Lead (West)

WSP in the UK & Ireland invites applications for an Associate Director/Technical Director – Building Performance Modelling Lead. The role will support the delivery of sustainable building solutions on high‑profile projects and major frameworks as part of a growing national team. It will be based from either our Bristol or Cardiff offices for a minimum of three days per week.

Overview

The Building Performance team primarily supports the UK business in terms of energy, carbon and holistic sustainability advice within the Built Environment. The team coordinates all WSP disciplines to deliver sustainable designs and provides sustainability & energy master planning advice for single‑building projects, urban and semi‑rural developments, and supports the delivery of BREEAM, LEED, WELL and NABERS consulting services.

Reporting to the Regional Building Performance Lead, you will develop and grow the team’s offering across a range of sectors. The role is client‑facing and will help clients understand how to define and fulfil their strategic goals towards net‑zero operational energy, embodied carbon, and wider sustainability targets.

A Little More About Your Role

  • Lead the delivery of sustainable building design, focusing on building performance modelling, for a diverse portfolio of projects and act as the internal “sustainability lead”.
  • Develop the approach for sustainability across significant portfolios and major frameworks.
  • Increase WSP’s profile, secure new work and improve technical knowledge relating to sustainable design.
  • Undertake business development activities including B2B meetings and industry events, leveraging existing UK client relationships.
  • Understand and support client briefs, translating aspirations into practical delivery models.
  • Coordinate sustainability delivery across design teams and stakeholders, internally and externally.
  • Identify opportunities for cross‑selling services and coordinate with WSP experts across other teams.
  • Support the growth of the existing team through recruitment and staff development.
  • Prepare high‑quality reports that clearly communicate issues and conclusions.
  • Apply the range of current and proposed UK sustainability legislation to project solutions at all governance levels.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate

  • Expert knowledge and experience in building performance modelling, including Part L compliance, TM52 & 59 overheating assessments, TM54 operational energy assessments.
  • Understanding of energy strategy for complex, multi‑use developments.
  • Experience in Net Zero, Low Carbon Design and materials.
  • Experience managing internal and project‑related financial budgets.
  • Bid support – experience winning/bidding with business and commercial acumen.
  • Knowledge of the construction process and implications of sustainable design.
  • Understanding of BREEAM and other environmental assessment methodologies.
  • Knowledge of current UK planning policies relating to sustainability and Net Zero targets.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information to clients and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong presentation skills and time management.
  • Capability to coordinate and train junior consultants.
  • Must be able to obtain UK vetting level of Security Check (SC).

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering, environmental, architectural or sustainability related subject.
  • Membership of a related professional institution; progression towards or attainment of Chartered status (engineer, scientist, energy manager or environmentalist).
  • Low Carbon Energy Assessor (LCEA).
  • NABERS assessor.
