Overview

Principal or Senior Consultant / Engineer:
Local Government Flood Risk Management and Sustainable Drainage – role at WSP in the UK & Ireland.

We are seeking experienced applicants to join our Sustainable Water Management team to deliver flood risk management projects for Local Authority clients. The role can be at Senior or Principal grade, depending on experience, with flexibility on location within the UK and a true hybrid work arrangement.

What you will do

You will contribute to a diverse range of flood risk management projects, with a focus on delivering and taking technical lead roles. Typical project activities may include:

  • Delivering high-quality technical outputs to clients, often as a technical reviewer.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior colleagues and overseeing small project teams.
  • Managing workload and project delivery with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrating positive health & safety behaviours and championing this within the team.
  • Planning tasks/projects, providing input to programme, budget, and quality requirements.
  • Engaging professionally with clients and developing a trusted advisor network, supported by more senior colleagues.
  • Contributing to securing small projects and extensions to existing projects.
  • Developing solutions that address client issues and needs in collaboration with project or team leaders.
Skills / Experience
  • Experience in flood risk management with local authorities or a mix of public and private sector experience.
  • Experience budgeting and leading delivery of projects or technical outputs related to flood risk management or sustainable drainage.
  • Understanding of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, the Land Drainage Act, and Planning Practice Guidance:
    Flood Risk and Coastal Change; understanding of UK planning regulatory context is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to mentor colleagues and liaise with senior stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of surface water drainage modelling and Sustainable Drainage Systems.
  • Experience preparing Local Flood Risk Management Strategies and Strategic Flood Risk Assessments.
  • Demonstrable experience in technical report writing and checking; ability to present and lead meetings with teams and clients.
Qualifications
  • A degree in a relevant environmental, geographical, science or engineering discipline is essential.
  • Chartered status with

    C.WEM, CEnv, CSci or CEng is desirable for Principal, or evidence of working towards chartership for Senior.
