We are seeking a Technical Educator with broad technical experience and proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in a conservation, environmental and/or biological sciences context. You will join our Environmental Science Technical Team within the College of Health, Science and Society (CHSS) and will play a vital part in supporting teaching, learning and research in the School of Applied Sciences (SoAS).
As the Technical Educator for GIS, you will take responsibility for the CHSS GIS suite, maintaining full service throughout the year and resolving issues if they occur, as well as keeping abreast of new functionality and emerging technologies. You will be encouraged to be a champion for GIS inside and outside UWE, promoting our skills and capabilities. You will also be encouraged to identify and explore new opportunities for collaboration, build and maintain professional relationships and support research and other projects.
Collaborating with academic colleagues, you will be at the center of the ongoing development and delivery of high‑quality GIS teaching. You will provide ongoing instruction and support to GIS users, primarily our undergraduate and postgraduate students, but also our colleagues and partners. You will co‑design practical curricula, create lesson plans, exercises and learning materials that align with module and programme outcomes.
You will teach small and large groups, assess students’ practical skills through competency‑based assessments and offer supportive, constructive feedback to help them progress.
In addition to the GIS aspects of the role, you will assist with the Environmental Science Technical Team’s other responsibilities. These include preparation and delivery of laboratory and field work practical activities (including taking part in residential field trips), maintaining and managing our specialist spaces and our fleet of scientific equipment and instrumentation, supporting student research projects, and supporting the management of Health, Safety and Wellbeing in our areas by preparing risk assessments and ensuring compliance with university and legal requirements.
You will also have the opportunity to support the School, College, and University’s wider objectives and activities in a variety of ways, by engaging with colleagues, teams, groups, and committees that operate at various levels of the institution, to help shape our direction of travel into the future.
This role is an exciting opportunity to expand your knowledge of GIS and GIS‑adjacent technologies, explore emerging applications and services, and to evolve your confidence and expertise in teaching and instruction techniques. It is also an opportunity to become part of a thriving science community with a range of interests and specialisms, where you can broaden your horizons, make connections with an extensive assortment of scientists and gain a wide variety of experience.
AboutYou
You will need strong GIS and geospatial skills, along with the confidence to support and teach others in a friendly, practical way. Good communication, a collaborative mindset and a genuine enjoyment of sharing your knowledge are essential.
You will need to be organised and adaptable, and able to seamlessly move between different tasks. Staying calm and focussed will be key when managing competing demands, such as planning and delivering sessions, supporting the wider team’s activities and helping students troubleshoot GIS issues.
Just as importantly, you should bring a willingness to learn—whether that’s exploring new tools, keeping up with emerging technologies or developing your own teaching practice as you grow in the role.
