Overview
This is a substantive full-time consultant post in the Plastic Surgery Department with a major interest in Microvascular Breast Reconstructive surgery. The Plastic Surgery Breast Reconstructive department is a regional service primarily covering Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol to provide specialist Breast Cancer and Reconstructive surgical expertise. The post-holder will join the Breast Reconstruction team, regularly cross-covering colleagues in the absence of team members, with regular elective theatre and outpatient capacity.
The role includes participation in the Oncoplastic Breast MDT and the Plastic Surgery Service and On-Call rota.
The post holder will be part of a team that includes Mr Sherif Wilson, Miss Philippa Jackson and Miss Naomi Patel. Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC’s specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have CESR in place at the time of interview.
Jobdetails
There are dedicated plastics and burns general anaesthetic operating theatres and three local anaesthetic theatres, with 24-hour access to general emergency theatres for out-of-hours trauma cases. There is secretarial support and shared office accommodation for the consultant team. An on-call commitment is required to deliver an emergency adult and paediatric plastic surgery service. The department has dedicated emergency plastic surgery beds and burns unit beds, sharing elective capacity with other specialties, with access to ITU and HDU beds.
North Bristol NHS Trust is one of two designated Major Trauma Centres in South West England, providing adult and paediatric Orthoplastic surgical expertise.
A formal job plan will be reviewed between the post holder and Specialty Lead within three months of commencement. The plan will be reviewed prospectively to set duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.
Person specificationQualifications And Registration
Essential criteria
- Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent (for non-UK applicants)
- Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
- Must have CCT in Plastic Surgery and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment. CESR applicants are welcome and must have CESR in place at the time of interview.
Desirable criteria
- Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MS).
Training and Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
- Minimum of 10 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
- Training in diagnosis and treatment of routine plastic surgery conditions.
- Specialist knowledge, training and interest in microsurgical breast reconstruction
- Experience and training in surgical management of common, non-specialised conditions in children, including trauma
Desirable criteria
- Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship in an approved UK or overseas position or demonstrable equivalent experience
- Breast Microsurgery Fellowship in an approved UK or overseas position or demonstrable equivalent experience
Further Training, Management, Audit
Essential criteria
- Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
- Experience in audit projects and written up
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
- Knowledge of political context within which we operate
Desirable criteria
- Up to date evidence of completion of audits
- Completion of a general management course or programme
- Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management
Research, Teaching, Publications
Essential criteria
- Proven teaching ability.
- Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates
Desirable criteria
- Proven track record in research related to breast reconstruction and microsurgery
