Overview
Substantive Consultant of Rehabilitation Medicine at North Bristol NHS Trust; serving across The Bristol Centre for Enablement (BCE), The Major Trauma Centre and Neurosciences service at Southmead Hospital. Please note the JD for this role has approval from the Royal College. Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC’s specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post.
CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.
Essential criteria
- MRCP/MRCS/MRCGP or equivalent
- Maintain Full registration with the GMC
- CCT or equivalent in Rehabilitation Medicine or Neurology OR are within six months of achieving CCT or equivalent at the time of interview
Desirable criteria
- Higher qualification e.g. MSc, MD, PhD
- European, US, or Commonwealth Board certification in rehabilitation medicine or neurorehabilitation
- Evidence of additional relevant training e.g. management and leadership
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) describes algorithms that can be used to produce new content. It is developing and is now being used as a support mechanism for content-based creations. Applicants are required to declare use of AI in applications.
The post holder will undertake clinical and administrative duties to ensure the care of patients and the smooth running of the clinical department. They will work in partnership with colleagues across disciplines and external links to the Trust and service users.
Main duties of the job
- Initial rehabilitation medicine assessment of allocated major trauma and HART patients within 72 hours.
- Providing regular assessment and advice for major trauma/HART inpatients, supported by the Major Trauma and HART Practitioners (MTP) team.
- Ensuring the completion of appropriate electronic rehabilitation prescriptions during admission and at discharge.
- Attend daily board round meetings with MT/HART practitioners and RM colleagues to support discharge planning for acute patients with complex rehabilitation needs.
- Facilitate and participate in complex family meetings and case conferences to deliver interdisciplinary rehabilitation programmes.
- Deliver a responsive in-reach service to acute wards (including ICU) to provide assessment and advice on rehabilitation aspects of patient management; communicate with family/carers regarding plans and prognosis.
- Liaise with regional rehabilitation services to enhance patient flow and timely transfer when appropriate.

DetailedJob Description And Main Responsibilities
The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his or her charge and to ensure the proper functioning of the service. They will work in partnership to create a high quality and responsive service and will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, including acute rehabilitation input for major trauma and HART, particularly for those with complex needs.
They will be involved in administrative, teaching, CME, audit and quality improvement activities and encouraged to participate in research and service development. They should adhere to Trust policies and contribute to policy and service development, with understanding of NHS financial management to optimise service delivery.
The post holder will provide compassionate leadership to clinical teams and may manage multi-agency teams across Primary and Secondary Care. They will supervise junior staff and lead by example with compassion.

Training And Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
- Wide experience in rehabilitation and/or neurorehabilitation culminating in the award of CCT or equivalent
- Proficiency in complex spasticity management (including refilling from Intrathecal Baclofen pumps and botulinum toxin injections)
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
- Knowledge of political context within which we operate
- Clinical Governance principles
- Experience in day-to-day organisation of rehabilitation, neurology or neurorehabilitation services in a busy tertiary hospital
