Main duties of the job

The team undertakes diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures. A comprehensive and advanced endovascular service is provided for the entire region as a tertiary neurovascular unit. We pride ourselves for our friendly and supportive culture.

Approximately 100 aneurysm embolization procedures are completed each year for subarachnoid haemorrhage, with an established 7/7 coiling service. We treat approximately 30-50 elective endovascular cases undertaken treating a range of pathologies. The INRs work very closely with our neuro-intensive care colleagues, with a 7/7 combined neurosurgery and neuro-intensive care MDT every morning at 8am.

We have a rapidly expanding mechanical thrombectomy service, treating approximately 200 over the past year with a 24/7 service that went live in December 2022. The Trust objective is to provide 24/7 mechanical thrombectomy service to the whole of South Wales as well as the current 24/7 catchment of SW England, with projected mechanical thrombectomy numbers reaching 300/year. The stroke unit at North Bristol is a high-volume tertiary stroke unit, providing all aspects of stroke care, including acute IV thrombolysis, for a large geographical area of the South West of England.
