Urban Designer – Architecture & Urban Design Job in Bristol, Somerset

Salary £29,000–£35,000 depending on experience

Location Bristol, Somerset (Hybrid working – minimum three days in the office including core Tuesday)

Overview of the Role

An Urban Designer is required to join a growing, employee-owned architecture and urban design practice based in Bristol. This Urban Designer – Architecture & Urban Design Job in Bristol, Somerset offers the opportunity to support master planning and placemaking projects across a range of scales within a collaborative studio environment.

Working as part of the Bristol studio, you will contribute to concept development, strategic master planning and placemaking strategies. The role is suited to an early-career Urban Designer with at least one year of experience in an urban design or architecture practice, looking to develop within a structured and supportive environment.

This is a permanent, hybrid position requiring a minimum of three days per week in the Bristol studio.

Practice & Project Information

The practice has been established for over 45 years and employs approximately 200 people across nine UK offices. The Bristol studio, launched in 2018, has grown to around 30 team members working across urban design, landscape architecture and environmental planning.

The team delivers landscape-led and outcomes-focused placemaking projects for both public and private sector clients. Current and recent work includes town centre regeneration, urban extensions and large-scale strategic masterplans across the UK.

As a 100% employee-owned business, all staff contribute to the direction and long-term success of the practice. The Bristol studio operates within a collaborative, open environment, with strong cross-office working and structured professional development, including mentorship and formal review processes.

This Urban Designer job offers exposure to multidisciplinary working and the opportunity to develop urban design skills across varied project typologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support urban design and master planning projects across a range of scales
  • Assist with concept development and placemaking strategies
  • Produce high-quality graphics, visualisations and CAD drawings
  • Contribute to design reports and written documentation
  • Work collaboratively with Associates, Directors and multidisciplinary teams
  • Complete allocated design tasks and provide support to senior team members
  • Participate in design reviews and studio discussions
  • Engage in a structured Personal Development Plan with an assigned mentor
Required Skills and Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in an urban design or architecture practice
  • Degree in Urban Design or Architecture
  • Strong conceptual urban design and placemaking skills
  • High-quality portfolio demonstrating clear design thinking
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD and Rhino
  • Working knowledge of 3D modelling;
    Revit desirable
  • Experience contributing to town centre, urban extension or strategic master planning projects advantageous
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative team approach within an office-based project environment
  • Understanding of UK urban design principles and placemaking frameworks
