Position Summary

US Sailing is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive part-time contractSafe Sport Compliance Officer to lead and manage the organization’s Safe Sport program, which aims to protect participants from various forms of abuse and misconduct in youth sailing. This part-time contracted position will oversee background screening, Safe Sport reporting procedures, internal recordkeeping, and the response and implementation of corrective actions related to the Safe Sport audit process.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing sensitive information with discretion and operating within a compliance-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate monthly background check renewals with internal stakeholders (Education, Youth, ODP, Olympic, HR departments).
  • Submit background screening requests as needed, primarily for HR and Youth Programs staff.
  • Collaborate with Hire Image to facilitate and manage migration to new platform.

Safe Sport Reporting and Case Management

  • Monitor and respond to Safe Sport reports received by US Sailing.
  • Conduct preliminary inquiries of reports to determine jurisdiction.
  • Oversee intake, tracking and resolution of Safe Sport reports, ensuring timely action.
  • Actively monitor Safe Sport inquiry inbox and respond to the U.S. Center for Safe Sport membership inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Provide communication to all relevant parties on progress and status of complaints, investigation, hearing procedures, appeals and final resolutions.
  • Maintain records of Safe Sport cases, status and decisions in internal databases.

Safe Sport Audit Oversight

  • Serve as primary contact with the U.S. Center for Safe Sport Audit team.
  • Collaborate with US Sailing leadership (COO and Youth Director) to review the Draft Audit and Risk Assessment Reports.
  • Collaborate with US Sailing leadership (COO and Youth Director) to prepare and submit the Management Response within the required 2-week timeline.
  • Coordinate implementation of corrective actions internally and communicate progress to the Center as needed.
  • Work with US Sailing’s Marketing Team to publicly post the Final Report and Corrective Action Update Form.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional email correspondence.
  • High level of discretion and integrity in handling confidential or sensitive information.
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures, and manage compliance processes accurately.
  • Proficiency with Outlook and Excel or similar tools for record-keeping and tracking.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple departments and with external stakeholders.

Position Qualifications and Requirements:

  • 3–5 years of experience in compliance, legal, human resources, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with the U.S. Center for Safe Sport Code and procedures and experience working at a National Governing Body is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations is a plus.
