The Laboratory Manager of the School of Engineering, Computing, and Construction Management serves as the responsible administrator for the operation, maintenance, and continued development of the educational laboratories supporting the School's engineering, construction management, and computer science programs. The Laboratory Manager oversees all laboratory equipment associated with civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as construction related disciplines. Major specific areas of responsibilities of this position include working cooperatively with faculty and students, training and supervising student assistants and student laboratory technicians in proper laboratory operation and safety practices.

The Laboratory Manager must possess a familiarization with computer technology, especially as it relates to instrumentation and measurement of laboratory projects. The Laboratory Manager will assist faculty members, as needed, with the conduct of laboratories.

Laboratory Administration

The Laboratory Manager will manage and administer all processes, activities and planning associated with the School's Laboratories.

Specific administrative responsibilities include: organizing and supervising all day-to-day operations within the laboratories according to established department standards, supervising work study students, assigning tasks and ensuring performance, inventorying, ordering and receiving laboratory equipment and supplies, conferring with faculty on equipment needs and translating these needs into submittal of capital requests and operating expenses, working effectively with other academic units and administrative offices to facilitate outside attendees utilization of laboratory facilities, ensuring a professional, safe and accountable operational climate and, recommending, planning, programming and coordinating the execution of the above functions in accordance with established school goals and objectives.

Equipment Planning Implementation

The Laboratory Manager will submit capital equipment budgetary requirements as requested by faculty, consolidate, review, and recommend laboratory equipment purchase over one year and, prepare and recommend the laboratory operating budget.

Supplies Procurement/Control

The Laboratory Manager will maintain equipment inventory, research material and equipment supplies through various vendors, and receive and arrange for equipment delivery set-up and operation.

Laboratory Safety Planning

The Laboratory Manager has responsibility for the safe operation of individuals working in the laboratories. To that end, the Laboratory Manager will establish and implement guidelines and policies to ensure faculty and students with a safe environment in which to work.

The Laboratory Manager will publish and revise, on a regular basis, a laboratory safety and guideline booklet and provide instruction and explanation of same. The Laboratory Manager will also maintain equipment and ensure that any deficiencies are immediately corrected to prevent unsafe situations.

Student Projects and Research

The Laboratory Manager will provide space requirements for projects and research, participate in and collaborate with students involved in design projects, recommend and purchase equipment and materials for student projects and, establish outreach to organizations for contributions or donations for materials in support of student projects.

Outreach and External

The Laboratory Manager will work with the Department of Conferences to provide utilization of laboratory facilities and materials to external organizations, such as the Johns Hopkins Program (Center for Talented Youth), during the summer months. He/she may periodically meet with prospective students and families, giving tours of building and laboratories and providing general information on program requirements.
