Job Responsibilities
  • Provide respiratory care according to established plan of care, including complex treatments, procedures and assessments requiring professional judgment and initiative, as well as routine respiratory therapy.
  • Perform bronchodilator protocol and treatment plan, airway clearance modalities, ventilator management, and arterial blood gas draw and analysis.
  • Conduct patient assessments using chart review, history, bedside spirometry, and clinical examination, including invasive or non-invasive respiratory monitoring as indicated.
  • Demonstrate clinical problem solving, identify and validate problems, assist with clinical pathway, and evaluate patient/family outcomes.
  • Use appropriate respiratory and technical skills to deliver care to patients.
  • Monitor patients for any variance in the clinical component of the clinical pathway.
  • Apply clinical knowledge to complex patient care situations to resolve care issues and establish patient priorities, and initiate respiratory care education.
  • Assist with daily living activities.
  • Document respiratory care and other cross‑trained activities clearly, concisely, and timely, including compliance with JCAHO and State of Connecticut requirements.
  • Document patient outcomes on clinical pathways and other required formats, noting patient variances as they occur.
  • Collaborate with team members to plan, implement and evaluate interventions on the clinical pathway.
  • Communicate therapeutic regime and patient outcomes and variances to case managers and physicians in a timely manner.
  • Precept fellow employees and assist in orientation of new employees.
  • Provide educational and clinical guidance in respiratory matters to colleagues.
  • Assist co-workers and other respiratory care personnel in clinical problem solving and troubleshooting of respiratory equipment.
  • Participate in the development, revision and implementation of policies, procedures, and clinical pathways.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, including indicator development, chart review, patient intervention and evaluation.
  • Participate on hospital/unit committees and communicate important committee activity information to fellow employees.
  • Seek professional growth and development, attend staff meetings, in-services, workshops, conferences, and keep abreast of respiratory care skills and technology.
Educational /

Minimum Requirements
  • Completion of a two‑year AMA‑approved Associate or Bachelor's level program in Respiratory Care.
  • Minimum one year experience in respiratory care.
State/Federal Licensure
  • NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and Connecticut State License as Respiratory Care Practitioner.
Special Requirements
  • Computer literacy and experience in entering and retrieving PC data.
  • Availability for call‑in or other emergency duties.
Physical Requirements
  • On foot most of the day with moderate lifting up to approximately 30 pounds, repetitive walking, stooping, and bending.
Work Environment

Regular exposure to a variety of patient elements including infectious and communicable diseases and occasional stress.

Cognitive Requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; good mathematics, analytical, and organizational skills; able to read, comprehend and execute written and oral instructions.
