Overview

The District Attorney’s Office seeks an experienced Auto Theft Prosecutor to advance the mission of the DA’s Office by focusing on the prosecution of criminal cases related to auto theft. This position is grant-funded through a partnership with the Colorado District Attorney’s Council and will focus exclusively on the investigation and prosecution of cases involving motor vehicle theft, organized criminal acts related to auto theft, and other associated violent crimes across several judicial districts.

The grant funding for this position is extended through June 2026, with the opportunity for further annual extension through June 2028.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to seeking justice, preserving community safety and improving the criminal justice system.
  • Maintain a large volume of felony cases and perform all necessary duties of a District Court prosecutor to initiate and pursue successful prosecution of auto theft-related cases, including plea offers, witness preparation, collaboration with law enforcement, and interaction with defense attorneys.
  • Receive and review felony case filing materials, examine evidence and witness statements to determine whether continued prosecution is justified.
  • Conduct legal research, prepare reports, and develop recommendations related to the District Attorney’s policies, procedures, and operations.
  • Represent the prosecution in felony-level calendar proceedings including scheduling, plea negotiations, probation revocation hearings, motions and sentencings.
  • Serve as prosecuting attorney for jury and court trials.
  • Represent the 17th Judicial District and District Attorney with professionalism and integrity in dealings with court officials, witnesses, the legal community, and the public.
  • Serve as a leader and mentor within the office, particularly with less-experienced attorneys.
  • Establish, nurture and improve relationships between the District Attorney’s Office and the community.
  • Demonstrate leadership to strengthen units and teams within the District Attorney’s Office.
  • Serve as a liaison to law enforcement agencies within the 17th Judicial District and surrounding districts.
  • Provide on a scheduled basis, off-hour and on-call services to police agencies during nights and weekends.
  • Coordinate investigative activities with outside agencies and assist in regional investigations.
  • Research, analyze, identify trends, and develop strategies related to auto theft investigations and prosecutions; maintain statistical records.
  • Assist law enforcement personnel to facilitate case follow-up and discuss strategy for investigations and prosecutions.
  • May travel regionally to investigate and prosecute auto theft cases.
  • Work closely with law enforcement, task forces, and other investigative units to gather evidence and support ongoing investigations.

This prosecutor will work for the District Attorney in the 17th Judicial District, but will also work with the Offices of the District Attorney for the 13th Judicial District (Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, Yuma, and Kit Carson Counties), the 19th Judicial District (Weld County), the 8th Judicial District (Larimer and Jackson Counties), and the 14th Judicial District (Grand, Moffat, and Routt Counties).

A portion of the grant funding requires training to law enforcement and prosecutors on legal standards, practices, and strategies related to auto theft investigations and prosecutions, and staying updated on current laws and rulings that may impact auto theft prosecution.

Qualifications For Success
  • Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Four (4) years minimum experience as a prosecuting attorney in Colorado or another state.
  • Prior felony prosecution experience is required.
  • Must be a licensed attorney permitted to practice in Colorado.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to integrity, keeping the community safe, and improving the criminal justice system.
  • Considerable knowledge of civil and criminal law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, statutes, and ordinances applicable to the 17th Judicial District of Colorado.
