Overview

Seeking to hire an Accountant at the City of Brentwood

Brentwood Finance Department

Starting salary range: $68,016 - $74,817 depending on qualifications and experience.
Up to 5% salary increase after successful completion of six-month probationary period.
Transportation Supplement: $2000 annually (paid over 26 pay periods)

The City of Brentwood seeks a motivated, detail-oriented, and collaborative professional to join its Finance Department as an Accountant.

In this role, you will support key financial operations for the City by managing fixed assets, administering the purchasing card program, preparing 1099 filings, completing accurate reconciliations, and producing financial reports and analyses. You will work closely with Finance leadership and departments across the organization to support audits, budget activities, and financial initiatives that ensure the City’s continued financial strength, transparency, and accountability.

The City of Brentwood, located in scenic Williamson County, is considered one of the most desirable suburban communities in Tennessee. Known for its strong business community, quality schools, abundant recreational activities, and high standard of living, Brentwood sits just south of Nashville and serves a population of approximately 46,000 residents.

The Finance Department is responsible for managing all financial resources for the City, including budgeting, financial planning, accounting, revenue management, and overall financial administration.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the City’s fixed asset program, including tracking, depreciation, reconciliation, and audit reporting
  • Administer the City’s purchasing card (P-Card) program, ensuring accurate coding, reconciliation, and policy compliance
  • Prepare and file required 1099 forms in compliance with applicable regulations
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries and perform general ledger reconciliations
  • Complete monthly bank reconciliations and assist with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Assist with annual audits by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation
  • Support financial reporting, budget preparation, and capital project tracking
The ideal candidate
  • Has a strong understanding of governmental accounting principles and practices
  • Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Is organized and able to manage deadlines during high-volume periods such as annual audit and budget season
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with internal and external stakeholders
  • Works effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
  • Shows initiative in identifying process improvements and efficiencies
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in local governmental accounting, auditing, or a related field
  • Tennessee Certified Municipal Finance Officer (CMFO) certification required (may be obtained within 24 months)
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Physical and other requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines which include a computer, printer, facsimile machine, copy machine, calculator, telephone, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently.

Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work.
