Overview
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Civil Engineer - Roadway Design to support our Transportation Team. This position sits out of our Knoxville, TN office, and can also sit out of our Nashville/Brentwood, TN office.
Responsibilities- Perform professional civil engineering work which includes development of 3D design models, calculations, sketches, plans, and estimates for transportation improvement projects (new/widened roadways, intersection improvements, bike and pedestrian facilities).
- Analyze data from surveys, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
- Assist with the development of technologies, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users and transportation systems; incorporate future-ready solutions with civil engineering design standards.
- Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues.
- Maintain quality control standards and procedures that align with company policy.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations, including summarizing research with findings and conclusions, and generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
- Assist technical staff with writing/reviewing design training manuals and workflow documentation to advance the engineering industry.
- Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis on design concepts, construction, mitigation, improvement activities, and remediation projects.
- Assist with inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
- Assist with preparation of technical proposals, scoping, and labor estimates.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multi-discipline team of engineers to execute project work on various projects.
- Collaborate with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects.
- Interface with clients as needed and support business development initiatives.
- Coordinate and communicate with project teams, managers, and the civil team; attend and participate in project team meetings.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering discipline and prior civil design experience.
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Proficiency in Micro Station and Open Roads Designer software; familiarity with TDOT Design Guidelines and Standards.
- Experience with design teams on TDOT and municipal projects (highway, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design).
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues, plus desire to learn new technologies.
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction, including rehabilitation and new design.
- Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, and the ability to convey ideas effectively to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, accuracy, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, work independently, and comply with company policies.
