The purpose of this position involves providing excellent medical care to our Vetco Total Care full-service hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Assistant represents the mission and values to all clients and sets the tone for technical and customer support.
Essential Job Functions- Greet clients and patients, escort them into an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs, and record the electronic medical record.
- Assist doctors with routine and emergency appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
- Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications, and help maintain the electronic medical record.
- Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and maintain client and patient records.
- Help prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures and assist in anesthetizing patients.
- Under supervision, perform in‑hospital treatments for sick patients, including injectable and oral medications and intravenous fluid therapy.
- Assist in training new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required.
- Keep the environment neat and clean and perform regular cleaning according to a maintenance schedule.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed.
- At least 1 year previous experience in a veterinary practice or sufficient animal care experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Compassionate, sympathetic, maintaining a professional attitude during emotional situations.
- Telephone and computer skills.
- Team player willing to learn new techniques, offer creative ideas, and accept change.
The majority of job duties are conducted in the Veterinary Hospital. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods of time. A large amount of time is spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.
Salary RangeHourly: $17.00 – $27.50
