Job Description
The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. This position may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights and/or weekends. The Active Treatment Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Active Treatment Coordinator Supervisor, performing moderately complex human services support work that includes organizing and coordinating leisure activities, monitoring and verifying quality of services, preparing feedback reports, maintaining inventory, and driving a state-owned vehicle (if required).
The coordinator collaborates closely with the Recreation Program Manager and helps ensure individuals are engaged in meaningful and functional activities.
- Attends work on a regular basis, may be required to work a specific shift schedule or rotating shift, extended shift, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
- Establish and maintain positive, supportive relationships with individuals served, family members and friends, and employees.
- Coordinate activities for individuals living at the State Supported Living Center appropriate to their level of functioning.
- Provide oversight as activities are conducted and follow‑up to ensure quality active treatment and services are provided that meet individuals’ satisfaction.
- Prepare written documentation and reports regarding the monitoring of activities and outcomes of observations, quarterly or as requested.
- Maintain professional and effective communications with the Active Treatment Coordinator Supervisor, Recreation Program Manager and Home Managers.
- Ensure the availability of supplies and resources necessary for functional and appropriate activities.
- Provide assistance, as needed, in transporting individuals going on scheduled activities and in emergency situations.
- Inspect work spaces and equipment for hazardous conditions, take necessary action to correct unsafe conditions, and report unsafe conditions as needed to immediate supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to participating in or serving in a supporting role for disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation; such participation may require an alternate shift pattern and/or location.
Skills and Abilities
(KSAs)
- Ability to make decisions and use good judgment when dealing with critical incidents.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency situation.
- Ability to demonstrate proper body mechanics, good posture, and proper lifting techniques.
- Knowledge of individual care techniques and of treatment, therapy, and developmental programs, or the ability to learn these through training.
- Ability to provide individual care, administer first aid and/or CPR, perform Ukeru (once trained), and conduct Safe Use of Restraint (SUR).
- Ability to communicate effectively and to train/mentor/coach others.
- Ability to work effectively with others and as a member of a team.
Valid Texas driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out‑of‑state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of licensure.
Initial Screening CriteriaOne year of experience in direct individual care work or graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
