REPORTS TO: Shelter Manager and/or Shift Supervisor

STATUS: Temporary Non-Exempt, Part Time and Full Time Hourly

PAY RATE: $20.41 per hour

This role is temporary and scheduled to end March/April 2026.

Scope

To provide shelter with a minimum of barriers. The shelter must be a safe, inviting place for those in need.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Staffing and scheduling requirements might require the employee to work different shifts. There will be two basic shifts, first (opening) and second (closing). Requirements for the safety of staff and clients will be the same for each shift worked. There will be different responsibilities between the Opening and Closing shifts.
  • Follow basic rules of operation as posted by The Salvation Army for clients and staff. This includes, but is not limited to, admitting clients into the program for the night, enforcing permissible personal items, issuing bedding on arrival, and general cleaning and maintaining of building and property.
  • Perform the outlined tasks for either the opening or closing of the shelter operation by completing the task sheet for the assigned shift.
  • Abide by The Salvation Army Social Services Code of Conduct and avoid conflicts of interest with program participants and/or volunteers.
  • Provide a warm, caring and courteous environment that encourages cooperation, respect and a sense of community.
  • Enter pertinent information of all activities in the shelter daily log during your assigned shift and review previous log entries to maintain continuity of supervision.
  • Provide all program participants, staff and volunteers with a safe and secure environment, including regular walkthroughs of sleeping areas, bathrooms, and client areas. Diffuse conflicts as they arise and communicate findings to staff and security as needed.
  • Distribute personal necessities to clients as needed and as items are available.
  • As time permits, launder excess blankets, towels and bedding as needed.
  • Support volunteers assigned during your shift by orienting them to safety guidelines.
  • Attend meetings scheduled by the Shelter Supervisor for training, planning and operation.
  • Maintain strict client confidentiality, keeping records secure and notifying the Shelter Supervisor of any issues you are aware of during and after your shift.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary as assigned or requested by your supervisor.
Education And Work Experience
  • No specific level of education is required, but the employee must demonstrate an understanding of a variety of human behaviors and adapt to any given situation. The employee must show strength of character when interacting with homeless individuals who may have developed survival and manipulation skills from street life.
