Olympic College is currently recruiting for an ICST 1 - Outdoor Recreation Trip Leader. This position provides direct instructional support for outdoor recreation courses by preparing materials and equipment, assisting instructors during field and classroom activities, supporting outdoor coursework, and helping operate specialized safety equipment. The role advances Olympic College’s mission by ensuring high-quality instructional support for wilderness education and safe, effective experiential learning for students.
- Instructional Preparation & Support
- Prepare materials and equipment for outdoor instruction.
- Set up demonstration and equipment for outdoor course activities.
- Confer with instructors to develop and prepare activities.
- Field-Based Instructional Assistance
- Assist instructors in demonstrating tools, equipment, and outdoor methods.
- Teach safe and efficient backpacking and alpine travel techniques.
- Instruct students in rules and regulations for outdoor recreation across local, state, and federal lands.
- Safety, Survival, and Technical Skills Instruction
- Teach individuals how to travel safely on and off trail, including alpine terrain with steep/heights exposure.
- Teach techniques in Leave No Trace, outdoor cooking, basic first aid, map and compass navigation, survival skills, weather assessment, knot tying, and search & rescue elements.
- Assist students in selecting and using appropriate outdoor equipment.
- Materials and Program Maintenance
- Receive materials and supplies used in classes.
- Support instructors in coursework-related logistics.
- Recordkeeping & Administrative Support
- Maintain activity, safety, and equipment records and prepare reports related to outdoor recreation programming.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- First Aid and CPR training.
- Training and experience in alpine mountaineering and backpacking.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications
- Previous instruction or mentoring experience.
Please note that we are unable to sponsor visas for this position. Only candidates who are currently authorized to work in the United States will be considered.
Hourly employees must work 480 hours in a rolling six-month period to become eligible for health benefits. Hourly employees must work 70 hours in any five months for two consecutive years to become eligible for retirement. This is an hourly position scheduled to work up to 18 hours per week, with a salary of $19.50 hourly. They are not initially eligible for benefits upon hire, but could qualify for the following.
