Position: 1:1 Para educator - Naval (260115002)

This position is 6 hrs/day for 181 days/year. There are 3 positions open.

To be considered for any Para educator position, please provide a copy of your high school diploma or GED equivalent (unofficial copy).

To be eligible for a regular Para educator position, please provide ONE of the following:

  • An official transcript from an accredited college or university conferring your AA Degree (or higher)
  • An official transcript identifying successful completion of 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college or university
  • A copy of your Para Pro Test (Praxis) with a passing score of 455 or higher or your Pearson Assessment with a score of 220 or higher or your Master Teacher test must exceed 65%.

JOB DESCRIPTION - PARA EDUCATOR
JOB SUMMARY

The position of Para educator is responsible for assisting teachers with planning curriculum; preparing materials and resources for student instruction; conducting student assessments for placement/progress reporting; maintaining student records. Paraeducators serving special needs students may be required to assist with student mobility; provide medical support; perform therapy sessions as directed; operate assistive technology; and assist with the implementation of the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Building Supervisor or Designee

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under the supervision and direction of a certificated staff member, the para educator will:

  • Instruct individuals or small groups to promote student learning objectives (i.e. reviewing letters/sounds, introducing new concepts/strategies, assisting students with self-corrections). This includes assisting with the implementation of students’ Individual Education Plans, including progress reporting and WAAS portfolio prompts.
  • Supervise students to ensure safety and well-being (i.e., classroom, lunchroom, recess, safety patrol, bus duty, parking areas). Supervision of special needs students may include students who exhibit unsafe, aggressive, or self-injurious behaviors or have medical conditions that require assistance and supervision.
  • Maintain student records/information (i.e. student daily attendance, grades, individual education plans, assessments); assess and monitor student progress; assist in the preparation of reports and documents to meet district and/or state reporting requirements.
  • Conduct student assessments to determine student placement and to evaluate progress.
  • Assist certificated staff with planning and preparing curriculum, materials, and resources as needed.
  • Process students' daily work; correct, grade, and record papers; communicate progress to students and teachers.
  • Assist students with toileting and basic hygiene needs; able to perform a one- or two-person lift.
  • Provide medical assistance (i.e., suctioning, tube feeding, disbursing medications, and seizure monitoring) and/or therapy sessions (i.e., occupational, physical, or speech language therapy) as directed by certificated staff or health care professionals. This may include medical assistance that requires specific training by a health care professional.
  • Provide off-site supervision of students participating in a work-based learning programs or athletic activities.
  • Attend meetings and training as required to improve knowledge and maintain skills.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Significant: talking, hearing, vision, kneeling, squatting, crawling, lifting, carrying.
  • Frequent: standing, walking, pushing/pulling, handling paperwork, reaching above the shoulder, lifting up to 35 pounds independently or over 35 pounds as part of a 2-person lift, exposure to blood/bodily fluids, moderate to loud noise levels.
  • Occasional: running, climbing, repetitive motion, use of personal computer/phone/vacuum cleaner, use of assistive technology, exposure to chemicals.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • 72 college credits or an AA Degree
  • Para Pro Test (Praxis) with a passing score of 455 or higher, Pearson Assessment with a score of 220 or higher, or Master Teacher test with a score over 65%
