HVAC Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician

Physical Position Description

The HVAC Technician is responsible for maintaining the HVAC systems at the schools within St Martin Parish that have been assigned to him or her so as to ensure proper heating, air conditioning, and ventilation needs at the schools are maintained.

• Perform preventative maintenance activities—including cleaning coils, greasing bearings, changing filters and belts, and adding refrigerant.
• Repair and maintain HVAC units—including changing out compressors, condensers, and motors.
• Respond to daily work orders to resolve HVAC system issues and make after‑hour calls as needed.
• Assist other HVAC Technicians at any school on any given day.
• Assist with special projects such as plumbing, mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and painting.
• Assist with hurricane‑related tasks (shoveling, filling/distributing/securing sandbags, removing trees and branches, stabilizing roof leakage until outside contractors arrive).
• Work under the direction and supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.
• Demonstrate good memory and mental stamina; remain alert and judgment‑able during the regular 8‑hour shift and when called to work additional or off‑hour hours.

• Interact with the public, school children, teachers, custodians, and other School Board employees in a diplomatic and courteous manner.
• Work largely independently while planning and organizing jobs, securing supplies, and implementing work safely and efficiently.
• Ask for assistance and follow through with requests at a polite and friendly manner.
• Listen to, grasp, and respond positively to supervision and instructions.
• Report unsafe situations to the supervisor in a timely manner and be aware of work being done by others nearby.

• Work with low voltage (24 V), medium voltage (208–240 V), and high voltage (480 V) systems; stay alert to make safe decisions.
• Maintain good safe working practices and procedures.

• Assist other team members with job performance when requested.

• Lift and handle items weighing up to 60 lbs repeatedly; climb ladders; work on rooftops.
• Perform work in a variety of postures: sitting, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling.
• Use a shovel and lift 50‑lb sandbags during hurricane preparation.
• Work both indoors and outdoors in the heat and humidity of South Louisiana for extended periods.

As an employee of the St Martin Parish School Board, the HVAC Technician will have occasion to interact with the public, school children, teachers, custodians, and other employees, and must respond in a diplomatic manner at all times.
