The major responsibility of a director of logistics involves overseeing, monitoring, and keeping track of timetables and costs. The incumbent will be responsible for the daily operations of the logistics department, as well as demonstrating the ability to be a strategic planner in order to help foster the company’s progress.

The director of logistics entails managing budgets by coming up with cheaper ways within budget to transport items to where they are meant to be or cutting back on staff. It involves overseeing staff by keeping track of their activities to make sure that operations flow smoothly.

The director of logistics must also instruct staff accordingly, as well as motivate them to perform. Be responsible for looking for ways to improve the transportation process, maintaining healthy relationships by working closely and in relation with people both inside and outside the company, such as clients and co-workers. Seeks feedback from customers to ensure that they are satisfied; and negotiate or liaise with vendors to get the best rates possible on materials and transportation services.

In addition, the director of logistics also involves evaluating numbers in order to strike a delicate balance. Ensures that merchandise is moved from one place to another as needed to get things in the hands of those requesting them and meet the demands of buyers, which helps the organization to make more money by selling more products in the process.

A director of logistics must be a problem solver and must also demonstrate a high level of analytical skills in order to identify problems, come up with solutions and solve problems.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities include the following.
  • Ensuring that goods are efficiently transported and they are delivered to where they are meant to be on time
  • Liaising with vendors in order to come up with the best and cheaper price possible on materials and transportation services
  • Recruiting and hiring new workers while also overseeing the activities of staff in order to ensure that operations flow smoothly
  • Managing budgets by making ends meet which involves keeping a careful eye on costs and finding a cheaper way to transport goods
  • Looking out for ways to improve transportation processes. For example, redesigning how a warehouse is arranged in order to make it easier for loads to be arranged and placed into trucks
  • Monitoring inventory by coming up with new ideas or innovations on how the organization can sell more products and how customer demands can be accurately satisfied
  • Maintaining good and healthy relationships with staff, customers, or vendors and seeking feedback from customers in order to ensure their satisfaction
  • Keeping track of timetables and costs.
  • Other duties may be assigned to accomplish company or department objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in transportation, business, supply chain
  • 6+ years’ experience fields related to logistics or several years of professional experience, preferably in field or similar manufacturing environment
  • 6+ years’ experience managing people/projects
