Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, General Labor
Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance of the collection system. Many types of work assigned may be repetitive in nature and, after learned, can be carried on with only general supervision.
Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesThe essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Drives and operates a variety of trucks and specialized equipment including pump‑out truck, sewer cleaning machine, vector truck, hoist truck and dump truck.
- Performs sewer line cleaning, wet well cleaning, pump station maintenance and repairs, septic and holding tank pump‑outs and any related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Assists mechanic in maintaining and repairing pumps and other specialized wastewater equipment.
- Washes and cleans facilities and equipment.
- Prepares and paints a wide variety of equipment, fences and structures.
- Performs janitorial work.
- Mows grass and maintains grounds at the plant and pump stations.
- Assists electrician in performance of his duties.
- Will be required to carry the “on‑call” phone multiple times during the year.
Supervision Received:
Works under the immediate supervision of Collection Systems Supervisor, Superintendent and Operations Manager.

Required Qualifications Education, Training and Experience
Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent, and Four (4) years of experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment, two of which must be wastewater related.
Special RequirementsSuccessful completion of the Sacramento Training Program, Operation and Maintenance of Systems, volumes 1 & 2. Valid State’s driver’s license with CDL endorsement.
Knowledge, Ability and SkillsKnowledge: Working knowledge of the hazards and safety procedures common to wastewater maintenance and repair activities.
Ability: Ability to follow oral instructions; ability to perform strenuous physical activities, including climbing and descending stairs and ladders, moving heavy objects and performing tasks requiring physical agility; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and the public; and carry out written and oral instructions.
Skills: To use and care for tools listed.
Machines, Tools and Equipment UsedLarge: Sewer cleaning machine, vector truck, pump‑out truck, hoist truck, dump truck and pickup trucks.
Small: Basic hand tools and painting equipment, gas powered mowers, blowers and weed clearing equipment.
Materials Handled: Parts and supplies needed to repair and maintain equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
