Track Maintainers with Cando provide track inspection, maintenance, and clearing services for the short line and various customer sites. Track Maintainers duties can include replacing and repairing various track components including rails, railway ties, fences, and adjusting the alignment and surface of the track, as well as responding to emergencies and track outages.
Roles & Responsibilities- Conduct regular track inspections and perform general repairs and maintenance.
- Ensure switches, crossings, and flange ways are cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted.
- Perform regular maintenance on all tools and small machines ensuring that all equipment is kept in good working order.
- Conduct job hazard analysis, report unsafe working conditions, and ensure they are repaired immediately.
- Manage all paperwork associated with purchasing supplies, equipment, and fuel related to the maintenance work.
- Ensure work reports are completed and documented as required (e.g., log books, maintenance reports, inspection reports, audits, purchase orders, fuel sheets).
- Perform other track activities as required by the customer.
- Skilled and knowledgeable in the appropriate inspection, maintenance, and repair techniques required to ensure the rail line is safe for operation and in compliance with all required standards.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with people of all backgrounds and levels of comprehension, including managers, employees, customers, and the public.
- Demonstrate initiative to work with others to foster a respectful workplace.
- Physically fit, including the ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license, Canadian Rail Operating Rules certification, and other clearances required to perform the role, including clear drug and alcohol testing.
- Experience operating various types of equipment such as hi‑rails, ballast regulator/snow fighters, loaders, bobcats, snowblowers, tie tampers, rail drills, and spikers is an asset.
