Physician/Clinical Assistant - Inpatient Medicine

Position Summary

The Physician Assistant/Clinical Assistant will be required to perform physical examinations, and to perform, order, and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic investigations/interventions. They will attend clinical and educational rounds and will complete standard of practice recordings of all patient encounters, including dictation or electronic medical records where available. Assistants must be able to communicate effectively in English with other members of interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

Responsibilities
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic investigations/interventions
  • Perform physical examinations
  • Take medical histories
  • Make diagnoses and develop management plans
  • Counsel patients on preventive health care
  • Arrange consults and referrals
  • Perform basic procedures such as laceration repair, sutures, wound care, castings, dressings, paracentesis, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba as a Physician Assistant or Clinical Assistant.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical program in Canada or abroad.
  • For Clinical Assistants: completion of Clinical Assistant Assessment, NAC OSCE, or LMCC.
  • For Physician Assistants: graduate of a Physician Assistant Educational Program acceptable to CPSM.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and internet applications.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changes in techniques and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in related skills and concepts.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Respect for confidentiality.
  • Ability to perform duties on a regular basis.
  • Respect and support for a culturally diverse population.
  • Ability to work effectively and maintain positive working relationships with co‑workers, clients, and interdisciplinary teams.
