Position Objective
This is a skilled technical assignment requiring the performance of civil engineering work for roadway and related projects. The position requires proficiency in the use of engineering equipment and technology including those used in survey, drafting and quality assurance testing.
Work requires the performance of engineering assignments in the office and field; including survey work, legal description analysis and drafting, project documentation, design computations, drafting and design, construction inspection, quality assurance testing, plan review and interpretation, contractor relations and related duties as assigned.
The position has significant impact on the ability to produce accurate field notes, drawings and computations as well as adherence to contract and regulatory specifications for materials, the absence of which would require correction by staff and contractors resulting in additional cost and project delays.
The position requires strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with County staff, local partners, contractors, and the general public on matters relating to the delivery of the Highway Improvement Plan and organizational priorities.
Work is performed under the direction and oversight of assigned engineering staff/project manager.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs survey work applying standard surveying techniques, utilizing survey instruments and technology as prescribed to produce accurate and reliable results for use in project design and construction.
- Documents survey data as assigned to provide accurate and complete descriptions, project maps and records for use in design and construction.
- Performs entry to intermediate level roadway design work for assigned projects ensuring the application of standard design principles and the timely completion of assigned projects.
- Performs project inspections to ensure adherence to contract specifications including material control schedules and related contractual requirements.
- Performs quality assurance testing as assigned, testing gravel, bituminous, concrete and other materials in compliance with testing protocols, project specifications and department standards, documenting compliance or discrepancies to ensure the satisfaction of project requirements.
- Performs research for right of way acquisitions, prepares documents, maps and other materials as needed to advance the right of way acquisition process.
- Reads, researches and drafts legal descriptions used in the right of way acquisition process, ensuring accuracy and completeness in compliance with documentation requirements.
- Maintains project records as assigned, performing documentation, data entry, file assembly and related duties to ensure the accuracy and completeness of construction project records.
- Maintains favorable contractor relations through professional and collaborative communications, addressing matters in a professional and solution oriented manner to ensure effective project outcomes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned in a professional and effective manner.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two-year degree in civil engineering or closely related program or equivalent knowledge gained through a combination of education and experience.
- Two or more years of work experience of a similar nature and scope of responsibility.
- Valid state issued Driver's License.
