Position Overview

Environmental Lead Advisor – part of the Asset Strategy & Policy Team at Yorkshire Water.

Location & Working Hours

Hybrid Working – based in Bradford with one to two days in the office each week.

Permanent role, 37 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

Role Summary

Provide expert advice to the business on environmental regulation, permitting and modelling. Influence negotiations with the Environment Agency nationally and regionally, ensure resolution of regulatory issues and risks, and support the business on new or changing environmental legislation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise on the impact of new and existing environmental legislation; draft responses and support filing of permits and licenses.
  • Review water service discharges, abstraction licences and ensure the company holds correct regulatory permissions.
  • Represent the company in discussions with environmental regulators and internal teams, influencing outcomes for permitted and licensed activities.
  • Maintain knowledge of the company’s environmental footprint and advise on mitigation and compliance measures.
  • Lead and mentor junior staff on technical and leadership issues.
Affected Areas of Expertise
  • Wastewater treatment – effluent discharges and treatment.
  • Wastewater Networks – storm sewer discharges and emergency flows.
  • Waste and Installation Permits – sewage sludge treatment, recycling and clean water wetlands.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Good knowledge of the main functions of the water industry and relevant regulators.
  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation relevant to the water industry and of environmental permits and licences.
  • Ability to define and document investigation scope, including monitoring requirements.
  • Numeracy and analytical competence in interpreting complex data.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills – able to produce technical reports and brief senior managers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for influencing and negotiating at regional and national levels.
  • Experience in delivering against challenging business targets.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
Additional Experience
  • Degree (or equivalent) in environment, geography, law or a related subject.
  • Previous experience in environmental legislation relating to water industry activities.
  • Experience with in the water industry, particularly with environmental permits or licences.
  • Experience in waste classification and definition of waste codes of practice.
