this position plays a crucial role in maintaining our roadways. The incumbent will operate small to medium equipment and vehicles, use a variety of hand tools, repair/replace signs and trim trees. This position will perform temporary traffic control in work zones and road closures.

your specific responsibilities:
upon receipt of the required cdl instructional permit or license; operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to, road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to: check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
Assists in the repair of operated equipment. Cleans and washes equipment.
coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments
performs temporary traffic control (maintenance of traffic).
performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic temporary traffic control (maintenance of traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
the successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
knowledge of:
- mathematical calculations
- standard safety rules and procedures
- the procedures, techniques and use of equipment in the maintenance and repair of highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
- operating a variety of hand and power tools
- operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles
- completing job related reports and forms
- communicating both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
- operate a variety of heavy equipment
- train others; read and understand job related materials
- develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
- lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds
- stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis
