Work Location: 5511 39th Street East, Bradenton, FL 34203

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm

Expected Starting Hourly Range: $19.51 - $24.38

Performs a variety of routine skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and construction activities in the multi-functional operation of the Manatee County highway and stormwater systems.

Working Conditions

Indoor/Outdoor situation. Performs strenuous work in varying and adverse weather conditions. Traverses uneven or rugged terrain. High-noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance. Regularly required to drive county vehicles as part of the duties of the job. Able to climb and descend equipment and ladders. Able to bend, stoop, crawl, and reach.

Position requires visual acuity and depth perception, as well as ability to hear and identify sounds.

This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment and continued employment with Manatee County Government is contingent upon passing pre-employment and employment screenings identified in Section XX of the Personnel Policy, Rules, and Procedures Manual. An applicant/employee who fails to pass a drug/alcohol screening, shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of three (3) years.

Essential Functions

All Levels:

  • Cleans ditches and culverts and cuts brush.
  • Prepares surfaces to repair pavement or concrete, drainage structures, and other related stormwater components.
  • Operates various types of mechanized equipment used in the maintenance of highways and drainage systems, such as air compressors, generators, jackhammers, cutoff saws, chainsaws, trash/mudhog pumps, cement mixers, flatbed trucks, dump trucks, and tractor mowers with implements.
  • Uses various hand tools such as electric, gas, and pneumatic tools and other related equipment in maintaining drainage and rights‑of‑way.
  • Performs operator maintenance on vehicles such as checking and adding oil, fuel, water, and air; checking brakes; and checking and changing tires. Cleans and washes vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs flagging operations, observing applicable traffic laws and regulations.
  • Follows all established safety standards and procedures.
  • Attends job‑specific training classes as assigned by supervisor.
  • Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
Stormwater Technician II
  • Works with asphalt, concrete, and other street repair and road building materials. Builds catch basins. Installs drainage lines. Forms and pours seawalls.
  • Applies knowledge of maintenance and/or construction principles and practices in safely and efficiently operating moderately complex automotive, construction, and other equipment in completing associated tasks.
  • Operates various hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles, such as dump trucks, front‑end loaders – general, skid steer loaders (bobcats), brush chippers, curb machines, hydro seeders, water wagons, tractor mowers with implements, lasers and levels, and confined space equipment.
Stormwater Technician III
  • Trains and assists less experienced technicians in a variety of assigned work activities.
  • Operates moderately complex equipment and vehicles such as asphalt distributors, motor graders, dump trucks, bulldozers, front end loaders, forklifts, Gradalls, track hoes, jet‑vac flusher trucks, street sweepers, flexwing/boom/slope mowers, water wagons, and walking excavators.
Sr. Stormwater Technician

Applies advanced knowledge of maintenance and/or construction principles and practices in safely and efficiently performing assigned duties, including operating complex automotive and construction tools and equipment, trenching and shoring techniques, erosion and sedimentation control, and pipe placement.

  • Inspects pavement surfaces and storm water structures. Makes corrective repairs or takes other appropriate action when necessary.
  • Reads, interprets, and explains blueprints, sketches, and drawings.
