Work Location: 2101 47th Terrace East, Bradenton, Florida 34203
Work Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 4:00 pm
Expected Starting Hourly Range: $23.67 - $29.59
This classification provides technical guidance and assists with maintenance and calibration of sophisticated electronic traffic signal controllers, conflict monitors, and detector units. The position coordinates between the Traffic Management Center (TMC), Traffic Engineering, and Traffic Operations relative to peak traffic, peak traffic data and other statistics that govern modifications. Position is subject to rotating on‑call status and electronic paging at all times when not on call.
Working Conditions:
Indoor/outdoor situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Reviews programming, timing, and approvals from FDOT to assure compliance with applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations relating to traffic circulation.
- Inspects construction, installation, and modifications of traffic systems; monitors facilities and programs; prepares reports as needed.
- Assists the Traffic Systems Engineer by compiling data on traffic signals, systems, and related information.
- Investigates and reports complaints relative to traffic control devices; may assist with repairs and modifications as directed.
- Tracks system programming specifications to assure all modifications are and archived in a timely manner and readily available for review by FDOT.
- May be assigned to lead a task and work with other Traffic Systems Timing Specialists.
- Communicates clearly, effectively, and tactfully, orally and in writing with co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Works closely with the Traffic System Engineer to assist with all aspects of managing signal system timings such as collecting field measurements and other data, calculating signal timing parameters, programming databases, and performing quality control & testing, field implementing signal timings and fine tuning.
- Programs MMU and uses IO‑Logic statements to program controllers for unique signal operations and, acts as a lead in developing and implementing coordinated signal timings.
- Provides construction, inspection, and modifications support for traffic signals. Monitors signal operations and prepares reports as needed.
- Provides support to the arterial incident management and special event management functions of the Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC), by remotely implementing temporary signal timing changes in response to incidents and congestion on the roadway system.
- Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
- High school graduate/equivalent.
- Minimum of four (4) years' experience relating to signal system operation, including repair and maintenance of traffic devices and related communication equipment.
- Minimum two (2) years' experience as IMSA Traffic Signal Level II Technician.
- IMSA or ATSSA Work Zone Safety (Intermediate Training) Certification, IMSA Traffic Signal Level I, and Level II Certificate.
- Valid driver's license required with valid Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Associates degree or related vocational courses/training certifications, with related electronic experience desired.
- Experience with ATMS.now central signal system management platform or similar system desired.
- Experience with Coordinated Signal System desired.
- Experience with Naztec 980 controllers, Tru‑Traffic and Synchro/Simtraffic software programs desired.
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations concerning installation, placement and timing of traffic signal devices and other electronic traffic equipment.
