Brief

Position Overview

The Director & Development Officer provides leadership in planning and executing a comprehensive annual and long‑range resource development/fundraising program for the Montana 4‑H Foundation. The role is accountable for private sector fund development; accounting, management and administration of restricted and unrestricted funds; donor and sponsor relationships; and promotion of the Foundation’s mission. The director reports to the Director of the Montana 4‑H Center for Youth Development, works with the Foundation Board of Directors and partners with MSU Extension to fund educational opportunities for Montana 4‑H youth, volunteer leaders and staff.

Frequent travel throughout the state is required.

General Statement

The Montana 4‑H Foundation, Inc. and Montana State University Extension seek a Director & Development Officer to provide financial and other resource support to the Montana 4‑H program. The Foundation partners with the Montana 4‑H Center for Youth Development to serve 14,000 youth annually.

Duties and Responsibilities Resource Development
  • Lead the Board of Directors in developing a long‑range strategic plan for resource development aligned with the Montana 4‑H program’s needs.
  • Work with the Board and the Director of the Montana 4‑H Center for Youth Development to identify annual funding needs.
  • Create, implement and manage the annual budget and fundraising operations plans.
  • Plan, direct and implement all fundraising activities, including donor contacts, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Research, identify and solicit support from the private sector, including individuals, groups, businesses, corporations, foundations and others.
  • Prepare proposals for major donor agreements, endowments and grant applications.
  • Receive, acknowledge and administer all gifts in accordance with Foundation policies; maintain accurate donor records in the database and prepare periodic reports.
  • Communicate the status of funds to stakeholders such as donors, recipients and account owners.
  • Lead the creation, design and administration of fundraising campaigns.
  • Facilitate engagement with and reconnect alumni to Montana 4‑H.
  • Design, coordinate and provide training on fund development and special projects for Directors, counties, volunteers and Extension staff.
  • Implement fund development and related duties in accordance with best practices and the Montana 4‑H guidelines and ethics.
Operation and Financial Management
  • Partner with the Foundation’s Program Manager to maintain an updated donor management information system and financial reports.
  • Work with the Montana 4‑H Center Director and staff to provide impact statements, funding priorities and accountability for program funds.
  • Hire, manage and evaluate staff; provide leadership to all contracted individuals.
  • Communicate effectively with Directors, donors, counties, state Extension staff, volunteers and 4‑H organizations via newsletters, website and social media.
  • Maintain relations with the Board of Directors, including budget and fiscal reports, and board committees.
  • Participate in training and professional affiliations.
  • Provide outreach activities, presentations and workshops related to the 4‑H Foundation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Accountability and Relationships
  • MSU Extension, Montana 4‑H Center for Youth Development and the Montana 4‑H Foundation Board of Directors.
Required Qualifications
  • Earned Bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience in fundraising, nonprofit management or a related field.
