This position manages the finance and reporting need for several grant-funded programs. This includes overseeing budgets, tracking expenses, and preparing required financial and program reports for funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), and the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Grant Manager handles day-to-day administrative and accounting tasks related to these grants and works closely with the Center Director to develop and manage budgets, as well as university offices such as Sponsored Programs, Financial Services, Human Resources, and the Dean’s Office to ensure all grant requirements are met.

General Statement

We seek an experienced grant manager to support oversight of SMRC’s grant-funded portfolio, which currently has combined annual budgets of over $2M and offers salary support to more than 10 professional and classified staff; TT and NTT faculty; and students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • In coordination with the SMRC director, help to prepare budgets and content in support of specific projects and grants.
  • Manage awarded grants and projects to ensure fiscal accountability, including personnel FTEs, contracted service agreements, etc.
  • Support program evaluation and reporting with budgetary data, program impacts and percentage of effort analysis.
  • Oversee submission of timely and accurate reporting as required by funding agencies.
  • Serve as the primary contact for procurement of equipment and services using grant funds.
  • Serve as point of contact for internal and external communications related to the duties of the position.
  • Serve as liaison with Fiscal Shared Services for accounting services.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business management, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated fiscal management experience, including preparing and monitoring budgets and financial reports
  • Demonstrated reporting and evaluation experience, including overseeing the collection and/or dissemination of sensitive research data
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply and communicate a wide variety of policies and procedures to students, staff and faculty
  • Demonstrated experience using computerized accounting systems, spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business management, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience with payments to external vendors/contractors in a higher education setting, such as travel expense vouchers, contracted service agreements, and guest speaker authorizations.
  • Experience with sourcing and purchasing supplies and equipment while following appropriate organizational procedures.
  • Demonstrated skills with grants and contracts administration and reporting, including knowledge of federal rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of MSU and State of Montana policies and procedures.
