Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Director of Technology, this position will be responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the broadcast technical center, IT network, broadcast equipment, and television transmission equipment. This position will also provide technical support for Montana PBS production activities in the KUSM studio, live MSU sporting events, and other remote locations; performing related duties as required.

General Statement

KUSM-TV is a public broadcasting station owned and operated by Montana State University‑Bozeman. Together with KUFM‑TV, located at the University of Montana in Missoula, these two stations comprise Montana PBS, a television network which provides programming and related services for the interest, convenience and necessity of a statewide audience.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of all technical equipment used in television broadcasting for the Montana PBS Network ensuring uninterrupted services to the entire State of Montana.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement the technical requirements of Montana PBS Television studio and field productions.
  • Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of radio frequency transmitters of all types in strict accordance with Federal Communications Commission regulations, Montana PBS standard operating procedures, and sound broadcast engineering practices.
  • Provide technical support in classrooms, laboratories, and production facilities to Montana State University Faculty and Staff.
  • Participate in the technical planning and implementation of new technologies at Montana PBS.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Two years of post‑secondary technical training specializing in broadcast engineering, information technology, electronic communications, or closely related field plus three years of full‑time (or part‑time equivalent) experience in one of the above fields or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated in‑depth experience with digital television production, television studio maintenance, as well as computer networking and software skills.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of LAN and WAN networking best practices.
  • Demonstrated competence with general and specialized computer word processing, spreadsheets, data bases and drawing programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair broadcast related equipment to component level. Demonstrated competence using general test equipment including multi‑meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.
  • Relevant knowledge of digital television systems theory. Knowledge of HD SD‑SDI quality control for video & audio level and timing.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Certification by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE).
  • Relevant knowledge of safe procedures required to repair, tune and operate High Voltage High Power transmitters and other RF systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of remote control systems.
  • Relevant knowledge of 3 phase AC power distribution, wiring requirements, and proper grounding procedures.
  • Knowledge of FCC broadcast requirements.
  • Basic fabrication and soldering skills.
