The Department of Civil Engineering (CE) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in broad area of transportation engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor. The CE Department offers BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and a BS degree in Construction Engineering Technology. The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering (NACOE) offers a PhD degree in engineering with a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Applied Mechanics option.

Approximately 650 students are enrolled in these programs supported by over 20 full time faculty. Research opportunities within the Department are enhanced by close association with the Subzero Research Laboratory (SRL) that focuses on ice/snow science, the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), the Western Transportation Institute (WTI), the Energy Research Institute (ERI) and the Montana Engineering Education Research Center (MEERC). The Department also provides hands-on experience for students through a variety of community-based projects.

Full-time tenure track appointments in the Department of Civil Engineering will have primary responsibilities in teaching, research, and service. Successful candidates will become an integral member of the Department, with duties to include teaching courses in the curriculum, contributing to program and curriculum development, developing a nationally recognized research program with extramural funding, and participating in professional/service activities. Applicants should be able to teach in a university community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.

Candidates should have a strong research background in one or more of the following areas: smart infrastructure systems, infrastructure applications of AI or machine learning, transportation infrastructure systems or safety. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with the Western Transportation Institute (WTI) and other faculty to expand the University's research portfolio in transportation infrastructure technology-driven initiatives. Preference will be given to candidate with a demonstrated ability to engage in multidisciplinary research to develop cross-cutting research programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Contribute to CE undergraduate and graduate instruction, mentoring, and advising.
Develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program.
Produce scholarly works.
Participate in professional/service/outreach activities.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

PhD in Civil Engineering or related engineering field.
Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills.
Evidence of scholarly achievements in the broad areas of transportation engineering.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Academic experience;
Professional experience;
Research interests that complement and expand current CE research programs
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplines.
Demonstrated ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the CE and NACOE programs; and
Professional registration or ability to become registered as a Professional Engineer within five years from date of employment.
