Brief Position Overview
This posting gathers a pool of qualified applicants for possible librarian and other professional openings on an as-needed basis. Work may involve reference and instructional service, other functional specialties as needed, and/or special projects.
General Statement
We seek librarians and other professionals on an as-needed basis for work in a variety of areas, including:
- Reference and instruction
- Instructional technology and/or instructional design
- Scholarly communication
- Digital initiatives
- Archives and Special Collections cataloging and metadata
- Special projects
Applications are accepted on a continual basis and will be maintained in the pool for two years. In your cover letter, tell us about the type of work you’re seeking. If it doesn’t fall into any of the categories above, no problem. We want to hear from you and what you’re interested in contributing to our library.
If hired, appointments vary in duration (a semester or an academic year) depending on the specific needs.
We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with a broad range of colleagues and constituents, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and can contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- A Master’s degree from an ALA accredited graduate program or terminal graduate degree in a field appropriate to the position.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Previous relevant experience in an academic environment.
- Previous experience working in an instruction or public services role in a college or university.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
The working hours will be set but require flexibility to meet occasional vacation and sick leave demands of the department.

- Non‑Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU).
