Position Overview

President Brock Tessman and Executive Vice President and Provost Robert Mokwa welcome the national search for a Vice Provost of Graduate Education and Director of the Graduate School. The Vice Provost will lead transformation and growth of graduate education at the Master and Doctoral levels, working with academic departments and college deans to improve recruitment, retention, persistence and expansion. The position reports to the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and will champion graduate education and ensure integration of graduate education and research with university priorities.

The Vice Provost will make timely decisions, respond directly to issues of importance and will ensure smooth operation of the Graduate School and graduate programs. The Vice Provost will effectively contribute to and enhance the tripartite land‑grant mission of Montana State University.

Foster a culture of continuous improvement

The university’s reputation is founded on a high‑quality academic and research portfolio. The Vice Provost will focus on continual enhancements of faculty‑student engagement and work to strengthen graduate student persistence and degree completion through collaborative engagement with deans and other Vice Provosts.

Improve student retention and grow enrollment with an emphasis on student success

The Vice Provost will lead initiatives and decisions to support steady growth in graduate student enrollment and champion faculty‑student engagement, mentoring, retention and timely graduation. A particular emphasis is the continued growth of PhD enrollment, professional master’s programs and other targeted doctoral programs.

Contribute to the University’s mission

The Vice Provost will advance the strategic direction of Montana State University by serving on the university’s academic leadership team and on committees under the Provost and President. The Vice Provost’s contribution will be advanced through engagement with the Provost’s Academic Council, the President’s Leadership Council and the University Council.
