Brief Position Overview

The Vice Provost will provide leadership, management and administration of graduate education and serve as director of the Graduate School. The vice provost will report to the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs (Provost). The person hired in this position will lead transformation and growth of graduate education and will work with academic departments and college deans to achieve advancements in recruitment, retention and completion, and expansion of graduate education at the Master and Doctoral levels.

The vice provost will serve as a champion for graduate education and will ensure the integration of graduate education and research in alignment with University priorities.

Education

  • Montana State University seeks a strong and visionary leader who will collaborate with faculty, students, staff and senior university leadership in addressing the opportunities and challenges facing graduate education and will lead the university toward the following strategic priorities:
  • Provide effective management, administration and leadership for graduate education. The vice provost will make timely decisions, respond directly to issues of importance and will ensure the smooth operation of the Graduate School and graduate programs. The vice provost will contribute to the land-grant mission of MSU.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement. The vice provost will focus on enhancements of faculty-student engagement and work with leaders to advance graduate student persistence and degree completion. The provost will communicate the value of graduate education to stakeholders.
  • Improve student retention and grow enrollment with emphasis on student success. The vice provost will lead initiatives to grow graduate student enrollments, including PhD enrollment, professional master’s programs, 4+1 master’s opportunities and targeted doctoral programs.
