Position: Liberal Studies Non-Tenure Track Faculty (Applicant Pool)

Position Overview

Montana State University’s Liberal Studies program, located in the College of Letters & Science, provides undergraduate students with a broad, integrated, and interdisciplinary learning experience. The program seeks pool applications for potential instructors, typically for LS 101 and/or LS 301, courses regularly taught in the fall and spring semesters.

General Statement

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non‑tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding. Applications are accepted on a continual basis and will be maintained in a pool for two years; candidates will be notified to re‑submit materials for continued consideration after two years.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and/or deliver Liberal Studies/Liberal Studies Online courses, as assigned.
  • If teaching online, complete specialized online training and regularly attend online workshops.
  • Assist with curriculum and/or course development, when applicable.
  • Collaborate with other faculty to ensure consistent standards across courses.
  • Participate in faculty meetings when called.
  • Participate in program and university assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Hold appropriate office hours and be available for student questions and concerns.
  • Meet and collaborate regularly with, and evaluate, peer leaders/mentors if assigned to a section.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in a field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of college student development.
  • Terminal degree in a field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.
The Successful Candidate Will
  • Develop classroom rapport with students and apply engaging pedagogy involving students in the learning process.
  • Mentor and inspire students from all backgrounds.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty and staff.
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Take initiative, exercise good judgment, and work well independently.
Position

Special Requirements
  • Union affiliation is determined by job duties and collective bargaining unit. Positions 0.5 FTE or greater are represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU) and employees may choose to pay membership dues.
  • Positions less than 0.5 FTE are not represented by the union and are not required to pay dues.
  • If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.
  • Exemptions apply for faculty who have completed a PEI exam or are working in Extension.
