Brief

Position Overview

The Honors College seeks individuals to serve as instructors for HONR 201 and 202, Texts and Critics, the interdisciplinary seminar for first‑year honors college students.

  • We are especially interested in candidates who, through their life experiences, research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to excellence in undergraduate education in the Honors College at Montana State University.
  • We require candidates who are excited about a classroom environment where student voices are centered.
  • We welcome applications from individuals who may have had nontraditional career paths, or who have excelled in careers outside of academia.
  • We seek candidates who possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute to the academic success and retention of honors college students.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach on‑campus course(s).
  • Advising, evaluating, and assisting students.
  • Participate in weekly, one‑hour faculty meetings, Mondays at noon.
  • Meet regularly with, collaborate with, and evaluate the student fellow assigned to your section.
  • Provide office hours for students.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Demonstrated and effective teaching experience at the university level.
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field, combined with either college teaching experience or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Doctoral degree or equivalent experience in an appropriate field of instruction or professional activity as determined by the department.
  • Relevant academic/professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses, preferably in a seminar‑style, discussion‑based classroom.
The Successful Candidate Will
  • Have the ability to relate to and support first‑year students.
  • Have the ability to mentor and inspire students from all backgrounds.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, staff, and student fellows.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Be skilled in utilizing engaging pedagogy that centers student voices in the classroom.
  • Be open to trying new approaches in the classroom and growing as a teacher.
Union Information
  • Non‑Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is 0.5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU). Faculty covered by AFMSU may choose to pay membership dues.
  • Any position less than 0.5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.
  • If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.
  • Exceptions:
    Anyone having successfully completed a PEI exam or any faculty working in Extension are exempt from the Union.
Program Description

Texts and Critics I & II are the foundational critical thinking courses required of all students in the Honors College. The theme for HONR 201, “Texts and Critics,” is “Knowledge,” and for HONR 202, it is “Imagination.” Individual sections meet at a variety of times. Each Faculty Fellow will co‑facilitate a section of Texts and Critics with an upper‑division Student Fellow who has previously taken the course.

Class size is limited to 16‑18 students, and discussions center on a variety of texts from across disciplines.
